“I won’t return to my coffin until we put Sephiroth in his.”

2) Vincent-coded as hell
3) my dude, I don’t think Sephiroth can die
4) UNLESS??? 👀👀👀
OKAY, SOME PRELIMINARY, DISORGANIZED THOUGHTS ON HAZBIN HOTEL S2E5/6. I'm going to try to leave out the bits that are just the verbal equivalent of me shrieking and gesticulating wildly.
Disappointing bit first: I actually was really discouraged at the beginning to see Charlie specifically genuinely not seem to give a shit about Alastor's capture. It really was, like.
Alastor [definitely plotting nefariously, but whatever]: You can take me, but don't put a hand on Charlie Morningstar! Charlie and Vaggie: Damn, it's so personally inconvenient that he's been captured by Vox, because now there's nobody to do the hotel duties! But he's probably FINE, ugh.
I hope someone plays a sound clip of Alastor's capture for her at some point, HAHA.
Meanwhile the moment Angel Dust shows up late in the evening, people are ready to hunt him down (rightfully so). There is definitely some setup for Charlie to make up for the friends she has been neglecting in general during her hyperfocus (Angel Dust, Husk, Vaggie at least), but I wonder to what extent Alastor is going to be included in that. I'm choosing to maintain trust for now, but if the bottom line really IS going to be that despite his "growing fond" line last season and his stress about "dying for his friends", Alastor is going to be the friendless sociopath archetype, then that's going to be a pretty big disappointment to me for how to handle our ONE bit of aroace rep.
TO BE CLEAR. I THINK THAT ALASTOR IS CLEARLY HAVING THE TIME OF HIS LIFE. Meanwhile, everyone at the hotel is having yet another fucking meltdown to a point that, honestly, if you told me his ONLY reason for getting kidnapped was "not having to deal with That Shit," I would find it believable. BUT. IT'S THE PRINCIPLE OF THE THING.
ANYWAY, THAT ASIDE. TAKES A DEEP BREATH.
The other overlords' commentary at the start of s2e5 seems to really indicate that Alastor's reputation was more intact than Alastor has previously been implying (catastrophizing?), and in direct contrast to nobody really having much belief in Vox as a figure of power who could back up his words.
Which is really interesting in conjunction to the way that Alastor taunts him these episodes. He's obviously trying to drive a wedge between the Vees, but the way that he does it echoes his words in Stayed Gone - he's not maintaining the line that teammates are inherently a weakness, he's saying that Vox specifically brings nothing to the table except his voice, and would be nothing without Velvette and Valentino. Unlike, presumably, when he respected Vox for working his way up, before Vox decided to stop doing that and instead take a short-cut to power by using other people to make his climb!
And having said that, boy is that "Excuses and lies still seem to be your specialty!" / "I try." exchange LOADED. WHAT IS GOING ON HERE. TELL ME, VIVZIEPOP.
I wonder if this has anything to do with the way that power is seen in hell. Vox can literally hypnotize people (and is clearly not bad at throwing down physically, so idk), but perhaps that is not seen as impressive compared to the sheer martial strength of growing to the size of a kaiju and fucking eating people because it means that he has to establish his dominance through non-martial means such as manipulation, teamwork, and, uh, capitalism, I guess.
He's also SUCH a white dude from the 50s this entire episode lmfao holy shit. Poor Valentino. I fully believe that Alastor is having the time of his life at least partially because someone else is putting up with this shit now.
I can't believe (/delighted) Alastor's literally just hanging out with them at Vee Tower this whole time, party and participant to EVERYTHING that is happening because Vox can't fucking cut the umbilical cord. Even when Val and Vox are fighting, Vox watches Alastor out of the corner of his eye. His first instinct at the end of episode 6 is to celebrate with Alastor while Valentino and Velvette do the work.
Love the confirmation that Valentino and Vox's powers don't work on each other. Val is too blind to get mindfucked by Vox, and Vox's ad for Love Potion says, "It works... I think?" THEY'RE MADE FOR EACH OTHER YOUR HONOR. Even if Valentino had to pull out the "talking to Charlie Morningstar" appeasement voice when talking to HIS (BUSINESS, lol) PARTNER.
I am glad that all this "fucking with the Vees" stuff is happening after we saw how well they can work together without Alastor fucking it up. Vox and Velvette at the hotel especially! He didn't flinch when Vaggie pointed a spear at him, but the moment it was in Velvette's face, Vox was pushing it away, putting himself in front of her, and ushering Velvette along. And now...
Also I love how you can see which dancer is the "8/10, for diversity," lmao. Fuck you, Val, she's the cutest one!
I love how pathetic Lucifer is. I knew they had to nerf him somehow to not make him a deus ex machina all season, and this was the PERFECT way to do it. It really goes far to explain his ennui, and also means his beef with Alastor is like 10x funnier. If he could smite anyone, it would be that guy, LMAO, but instead they're throwing rubber ducks and coffee at each other. Jesus. (Also it makes their mutual irritation funnier because their IS indeed something Alastor can do that Lucifer can't, and it's eat any random asshole that pisses him off or bothers the hotel. See: When Mimzy showed up!)
I also just enjoy pathetic Lucifer in general. He's such a fuck-up. The scene of Charlie walking up on him as he crawls backward is everything. The fact that he is not the hotel's strength but one of their weakest links (lbr they have many), especially as Vox once again calls him in at the end, is amazing! Love love love. Namedrop the man's estranged wife to his face again, please. Also, fuck, dude, be a dad! Your job is to NOT fuck off when your upset daughter lashes out at you for trying to help, actually! (And maybe someone give him a hug.)
"YOU'RE APOLOGIZING FOR GENOCIDE WITH GIFT BASKETS?" I knew it wasn't gonna work but I'm delighted he said it SO DIRECTLY. In fact, I'm delighted that so much of what Vox is saying is in fact 100% right - he's just using it for his own means. He is dangerous because he's twisting the truth.
It's also some fun hypocrisy to see him preaching unity while we are watching the set-up for his downfall via DISunity within the Vees - courtesy of Vox himself! Alastor is throwing fuel on the fire, but Vox was pulling this shit even before Alastor came into the picture.
I love everything about Angel Dust in these episodes. The headache. The fact that he's given up on redemption. The way he acts with Val. The way Vox beats the shit out of him. The horrifying sleeper agent hypnosis - there were so many hints laid for this throughout the episode and they capitalized on it SO well! I had been desperately hoping this was the case and I am now LIVING.
I also love that Vox was so canny about it. He sent in Sir Pentious as a red herring knowing that Alastor would find him and his tech, and then his real spy move was specifically done without the use of VoxTek technology (at least not any that would be discoverable). Fantastic!
Can't believe we have two episodes left only and still need to see what is going on with Rosie and Lilith.
Petition for Vaggie to be the one to go rescue Alastor because she is sick of trying to manage the hotel on her own, lmfao.
Speaking of Vaggie: that flash of her backstory was TASTY. I almost thought that was Lute getting slapped at first, but it wasn't; I love seeing confirmation of how abusive it was just at baseline.
(God, Vaggie is so pretty. I love her new hair this season.)
The scream rain is my favorite gag this season, actually.
I also think I liked literally EVERY song. A+ job, I am so happy.
Anyway, this is me the entire two episodes:
Something small and white flew out of Malfoy’s mouth like a down feather. It drifted aimlessly until it rested against the crook of his wrist. Malfoy’s laugh caught a hard edge in his throat and broke into coughs. More came out, scattered by the bursts of air. They were petals. Harry caught some in his hand and felt how soft they were. They were wet with Malfoy’s spittle. “Oh fuck,” someone said. “Is that…?”
