Nines had been about to enjoy his night in New York. He hadn’t expected to fly home with the next plain headed for Detroit.
He had just come back from the symposium on android-human work relations and had set up his laptop to videocall Gavin before heading out again with a few friends he had just made. He hadn’t liked leaving his love behind in Detroit, but he was needed there, and he hadn’t exactly looked forwards to talking with a bunch of people trying to keep everything polite and sugar-coated. But as soon as he went online, Gavin was already calling him. Nines frowned but shrugged. He had been gone for a few days already. Maybe Gavin was just looking forward to seeing him at their usual time again.
‘Hello darling, have you missed-‘ Nines stopped himself as he saw the other’s image. Gavin was bruised all over and looked even worse for wear than normal. ‘Gavin, what happened?’ ‘You remember our unsolved case? Only possible murder weapon a spoon? We had to let it fall for lack of evidence because that’s just too ridiculous?’ ‘Yes, I remember. What are you getting at?’ ‘Well, it isn’t that unlikely anymore…’ Nines cocked his head in confusion. ‘Gavin, you need to explain that in a bit more detail, I’m afraid.’
‘Okay. Well, it all started when you were gone, and I found my spoons in random places of the house. And no, I didn’t place them there myself! But I just put them back in the drawer every time, I mean, it could just be me, right? Well, since today someone follows me around with a spoon. The whole day.’ ‘What?’ ‘Nines, someone follows me around with a spoon and hits me with it!’ Nines stared at the screen. ‘And?’ ‘And it hurts!’, Gavin shouted desperately. ‘They never stop. I tried outrunning them, tried driving away and locking all doors. They always find me! Work is the only place I’m left alone.’ ‘Who is it?’ ‘I don’t know, okay?! They wear a mask and dark clothes.’ ‘And you didn’t try to fight back?’ Gavin answered by staring into the camera. ‘Okay, why haven’t you killed the guy yet?’, Nines rephrased. ‘They evade every punch. Words don’t help either and I won’t pull a gun on someone chasing me with a spoon!’
‘And where are they now?’, Nines asked, still not really believing it although his human looked in true distress. ‘I managed to close the door behind me, but I bet they try to get through one of the windows next. Wouldn’t be the first time. I- Phck! Phck, no, get away from me!’ Gavin stood up and left the field of vision of the camera. Nines heard a few quiet slaps and a louder punch together with curses, then two persons ran across the screen, the dark one throwing the laptop off the table. Nines only heard Gavin call for him: ‘Nines, please, you need to come back. I honestly don’t know what to- ouch! Phck you dude, what is wrong with you? I don’t know what to do, I need you!’
It didn’t need another word for Nines to grab his things and drive to the airport.
