Relationship Analysis: Jack and Spot (Film Versions)
Character 1: Jack is the charismatic, tough leader of the Manhattan newsies. He longs for a family, but can’t admit it to himself.
Character 2: Spot is the leader of the Brooklyn newsies. He appears tough and ruthless, but its all a front to keep his boys safe.
All About It:
Spot and Jack have a tentative friendship. When meeting to discuss the strike, they make little jokes at each other. (Newsies Film script, pages 51, 53) He also wishes Jack luck when he seems to be leaving for Santa Fe. (Newsies Film script, page 134) However, they aren’t close, as made clear by points two and three.
Jack isn’t scared of Spot. While all the other newsies cower at the thought of going to Brooklyn, Jack treats it very casually- even saying “Well, he (Spot) don't make me nervous”. (Newsies Film script, page 47) When he gets to Brooklyn, he defends Davey to Spot, insulting him along the way. (Newsies Film script, page 52) He also insults Spot as a ploy to get him to join the strike. (Newsies Film script, page 53)
Spot doesn’t trust Jack. When Jack comes to talk to him about the strike, he treats it like a fool’s errand, saying “'Jackie-boy's Newsies are playin' like they're goin' on strike -- '”. (Newsies Film script, page 51) He tells Jack straight out that he doesn’t think the strike is serious, too, and he doesn’t believe Jack when he tells him that they are. (Newsies Film script, pages 52, 53)
However, he still respects him. Once the Manhattan newsies have proved they’re willing to stand in harm’s way for the strike, Spot brings his army of newsies to bail them out, apologizing for doubting them along the way by saying “So, ya showed me (that you were serious about the strike)! Now I'll show you what Brooklyn can do --!”. (Newsies Film script, page 65) He also listens to Jack when he explains why they can’t soak scabs, and changes his mind. (Newsies Film script, page 81)
Will it Ship?
YES! Jack and Spot make a great team, and have some chemistry together. Although they do trade insults, it’s clear they’re good spirited and not actually meant to hurt.
NO! Jack and Spot are partners during the strike, but probably not afterwards. Spot clearly isn’t close with Jack, as seen in his relatively emotionless goodbye towards him, and Jack doesn’t particularly seem to care about Spot- just his reputation.

Spot/Jack #25: exchanging letters
Jack Kelly moved to Santa Fe when he was 15.
Growing up in Manhattan, he had always dreamed of getting away from the bustling city life. He dreamed of living in the desert, like all of the old Western movies he loved as a kid. He wanted to be a cowboy so bad that he didn't think of what he had around him.
Two years after he moved to Santa Fe with his adopted mom, Medda, he wished it hadn't happened. He missed his old life, surprisingly enough. He loved Medda, but he missed the family he had with the other kids at the orphanage he had spent a good chunk of his life in.
He also desperately missed Spot Conlon, his best friend and crush. Someone who hadn't spoken to him besides the occasional letter since he moved.
Honestly, it crushed Jack to not be able to talk to Spot much anymore, but what could he do? He tried everything. Spot just didn't want to talk to him anymore.
Jack, in a last ditch effort, sent a simple note to Spot.
Spot-
Look. I know you're mad at me, and I guess you have every right to be, but I can't keep doing this. I can't keep receiving these short, half assed letters that only hurt me more than anything.
I love you. Like, real life, I'm-in-love-with-you kind of thing. And I know this is sudden and complete bullshit, honestly, but it looks like I'm gonna lose you no matter what, so fuck it, right?
So yeah. Stop bothering if you don't want to put effort in it, okay? I'm tired and cant keep holding onto hope.
Sorry.
Jack K.
He sealed and sent the letter off and never expected to ever get anything back in return.
Then, a few weeks later, he got a letter in the mail.
Jack
You're an asshole, but unfortunately, I seem to like that about you.
Sunday, 9:45am, Santa Fe Airport. Be there. Ill need a ride to your house after all.

Hi I love polyamorous Jack: plz consider Ployamorous Jack, but instead of the usual kath/Davey/crutch/any mix of those three and him, it's him/Spot/Race !!!
actually ive considered something like this!!!i really really love spot/jack! i wrote a fic for it ... ;) ... and i’ve rp’d it mupltiple times
personally... i don’t ship race/jack... but i rlly love davey/crutchie/jack and then jack/spot and then spot/race......Let them coexist itd be so cute!!! and itd take a lot of communication but thats something these stupid boys need to learn anyways!!!
i could definitely see spot dating both jack and race but not race/jack, but i think they’re best friends. imagine them chatting about their shared boyfriend like
“does he ever just block your joke and go ‘ha ha ha.’ with a full stop and spaces???”“yES??? irl does he ever just kiss you when you’re laughing at him to shut you up”“um yes...”“...it works on you too?”“.....yep”
and jusT cute stuff like that?? i see race as jack’s second (musicalverse im not sure abt movieverse... but combined i love it when he has two seconds and its race and blink) so theyre rlly cute and close friends and i ... love... them ...
