Sry 4 the w8, I was busy during hot girl summer
Hello followers and mutuals, just a small update. I’m sorry that I’ve been preoccupied with school and haven’t posted any new content; next week is my spring break, so I think that’ll give me a good opportunity to post some new Helsa stuff. Do you have any recommendations as to what I should draw? I’ve been thinking about starting to post my Queens sketches and illustrations as well (my excruciatingly in progress secret Helsa novel that I’ve barely posted about because college), we’ll see. Please let me know your ideas!

I’ve been sitting on this for a couple days (hoping for some change and not wanting to face reality). Clovid-19 arrived in Cleveland (officially) 2 days into our spring break. My university has decided to move all classes online and anyone who doesn’t have to should not return to school at the end of spring break. Gatherings of 25 or more are prohibited and all club activities are suspended. The varsity sports are being allowed to continue for now, but we are not a varsity program despite training and competing as one (it’s a funding thing, we are too expensive). The earliest this could end is mid/late April.
Those who can are going home and rowing with non-school affiliated clubs. Those of us who are staying in Cleveland (international students, kids from LA and NYC, seniors who have permission to continue research required for graduation, and those who can’t go home for any other reason) have been told under no uncertain terms that we must follow not only the letter of the law, but the spirit as well. No joining the local masters team en masse, no paying for individual access to the boathouse, no team workouts at the gyms (which for now remain open). If caught trying to find loopholes, the consequences for the team long term will be significant. The university is taking Covid-19 as a very serious threat (not unreasonable with 2 hospitals on campus, one of which is treating several victims).
Our coach has received support from several of our competitors who have received exemptions (like the varsity at our school), but the chances of us receiving exemption before we disband on Sunday are slim to none.
There is still hope. No one is throwing in the towel on spring season. We will continue to train. Our coaches are already putting together the plan. We will livestream group ergs. We will do what we can from wherever we are in the world. Our crew family won’t be broken by this. One of the messages of support came from someone at Bowden College. They didn’t get on the water until April 16 last spring and they went onto medal at Dad Vails.
As a graduating senior, my heart is broken. I thought I had 2 more months to figure out how to say goodbye to the team that changed my life. I have until Sunday, because there is no guarantee the university will reopen.
But, there’s also a fire in my soul. We are going to train like we’ll be launching at Dads and ACRAs even if that’s the first time we get on the water after Spring Break. We are going to come out of this scrappy, hungry, and ripped as hell.
We have 5 more water practices left in Spring Break. The team is more focused than I have ever seen them. Every stroke has a different sort of weight to it. We are progressing quickly. Every dinner has become a team affair as we cling to each other. There have been tears and goodbyes and broken hearts, but there is also resolve.
Rowers don’t quit and we don’t give up.
I’m so done with people talking shit about the young people who went on Spring Break.
What the fuck did you guys give us to live for? You sanctimonious asses.
University debt, unemployment, zero healthcare, fear-mongering and no safety for when shit hits the fan.
You think people aren’t going to party/have a last hurrah at the perceived end of the world as they know it now???
[To be clear I’m at home with my family. However, I can understand where they are coming from.]
What a fine T-shirt I got! Love it! :)
Here’s some fun pictures from my spring break adventure before the corona hit 😂
