The Little Salmon Carmacks First Nation is warning spring melt could cause the tailings dam at the abandoned Mount Nansen mine in central Yukon to overflow or breach, and send a toxic slurry into the environment.

The company managing the site, however, says a dam breach is unlikely — though it could be at risk of overflowing.

Little Salmon Carmacks Chief Nicole Tom calls it an emergency, and compared it to the 2014 Mount Polley mine disaster in B.C. that saw roughly 25 million cubic metres of water and tailings effluent flow into surrounding waterways. It was the largest tailings spill in Canadian history.

It feels like almost overnight Spring is here. New birds singing, snow melting away and water everywhere. It was very nice

It was so nice I had to get out and go somewhere. As you can see, there is a lot of melting going on here. I drove to Festival Park in Freeland Michigan. This fishing dock is normally not underwater. This is a handicap accessible dock ramp, and you are looking at the Tittabawassee River.

This is another view that is a couple hundred feet to the left from the first picture. Not everything has melted but the river is flowing at a pretty good clip.

This shot is just on the right side of the second pic. Some Canadian geese are have gathered and some are in the water and others are standing on the ice shelf.

Today is the first time I tried making a smoothie with avocado. I have to switch up some foods due to allergies. This smoothie came out awesome, I must say. I used grape & orange juice, avocado and some frozen fruit pieces.

It felt good to get out and get some sun. 🌞

The mountains to the East of Grindlewald rising dramatically above the valley. The Eiger is out of view to our right. I like this pic for its illustration of the suddenness of the snow line. “Just like that” we’re in snow territory.  It is spring so you can see a grand triple waterfall on the mountain, about the middle.
