"what is this between us?" eyes not lifting to meet theirs, heavily focused on their lips as heart beat loudly into the silent air.

alex glanced around the room. everyone else was locked in some sort of bureaucratic mating dance—shuffling by the cheese cubes, carrying crystal tumblers of white wine over their little acrylic name plates. nobody looked up, not even at the two men whispering by the sad fruit tray. "nobody cares," alex replied. "and if they do—" he stopped to shrug, already slipping into the limp shape of his wool coat. "they'll just assume we're going on a smoke break anyway."
