Serendipitous Spring Dates
Spring has most definitely sprung. The sun is out, the temperatures are bordering on lovely, and the LGBTQ community is rediscovering those booty shorts, bowties, and bodysuits in honor of the warming weather and dapper style.
Yes, it seems winter finally took the hint and vacated the premises, and we think it’s time to celebrate. So if you’re planning a first date, an anniversary, or just a romantic break from reality, we strongly suggest you pack a lunch, take a hike, and get outside.

If there was ever a time to stop and smell the tulips, now would be it. Whether you live in or outside the city walls, celebrate spring’s full bloom. You can’t throw a stone without hitting a patch of bluebonnets in Texas, and D.C. is raining cherry blossoms. Manhattan’s Highline is covered in colorful blossoms, and San Francisco’s Conservatory of Flowers is lit up with blooming buds. Get two coffees to go, snag some snacks, and sit beside (or under) the spring foliage. This date might be especially nice if one or both of you have been under a lot of stress recently – it’s hard to have anxiety when you’re surrounded by pretty things, fresh air, and kisses.
We know that in many places, spring doesn’t necessarily mean warm, but after a chilly winter, everyone’s craving that summertime feel. So, instead of spring swimming, rent a kayak, canoe, or two stand-up paddleboards and spend the afternoon lazing on the water. If you need a bit more action challenge each other to a race. Loser makes dinner. We suggest bringing swimsuits, hoodies, and maybe a flask.
Visit the local farmer’s market and make brunch together.
This is a perfect weeknight date if you both tend to work the normal 9 to 5, or have a weekday/night off. But you can also make it a bit more of a special occasion by waiting ‘til the weekend. Come Saturday (or Sunday), get out of bed early and head over to a morning market, stock up on the freshest produce – think asparagus, strawberries, peas, fennel, rhubarb, tangerines and more (spring is delicious!) – and handmade baked goods, then make a decadent seasonal brunch together. Mimosas and clothing optional.
Take a new spin on a classic weekend day. Drive, bike, or bus your way out of town, even if you only end up a few miles outside the city limits. Spend the rest of the day traipsing through the new-to-you-two town, visiting antique shops, vintage shops, and quirky cafes. The novelty of being somewhere new will not only help clear your mind, it’ll also let the two of you get to know one another a bit better – or bring you closer together. It’s like taking the miniest of vacations. Take it to the next level by picking aliases for the day. Tell everyone you meet your both models, famous musicians, or former Russian spies. You’ll be shocked by how much fun you have. It’s like playing make-believe for adults.
True, this is almost always a great date idea, but a spring hike might be even better than a fall hike. Think – the object (or hopeful object) of your affection has been trapped inside for the past four months wishing the snow away, and the temperature’s rise. This is your chance to play the “hero” and whisk them away to stretch their legs and breathe in some fresh air. So pull on some short shorts, lace up those walking shoes, and pack a picnic for a perfect day.
Since April showers are so glorified, why not embrace your inner kid during the next rainstorm. Don some plastic boots – or not – but forget the waterproof jacket and go dance in the downpour. If this sounds completely ridiculous, well, it is. But trust us, it’ll be worth it when you see that pretty person’s face light up like a menorah on day eight. Besides, the options for what happens after you’re all wet and giggly won’t disappoint either. Pro tip: have some hot chocolate on hand for afterwards.
We told you ours, now tell us yours! What’s yer fave springtime date?
