Up at #ulishouse yesterday. When we bought the land, the only plants growing there were some thorny bushes and a number of olive trees. There was very little soil and a lot of rocks. By carting soil up in sackfuls, foraging for compost under the bushes & using gathered donkey shit to enrich the soil, we managed to make a garden. Well ok, we chose geraniums & succulents as our main plants as they're drought resistant and our main problem was water. We relied on a neighbour to fill our water storage tanks which had to provide for all our water needs. Recycling shower, washing machine & dish water was not optional & the plants didn't seem to mind. Sitting with Robbie up here yesterday we discussed what he intends to do with the land around the house. I'm happy with whatever he decides to do. We had our day while we lived here, now it's time for somebody else's input. I was extremely lucky yesterday - it had started spotting with rain as I was walking down the hill, so I was afraid that I'd get caught in a downpour. Not at all, when I got down to the beach a friend was getting ready to go to the port & gave me a lift up to the village. Got inside the door at home & the heavens opened. What a deluge! Much the same happened in the evening too, I'd got up the donkey track & made it home before it started chucking it down. The garden has a lovely smell of fresh earth today #March2017 #lambisstory #iosisland2017 #iosinspringtime #mylifeonios #myios2017 #springtimeonios2017 (at Mylopotas, Ios, Greece)
