Sprinklr cuts 4% of global workforce amid slowdown
Customer experience firm Sprinklr has laid off roughly 4% of its global workforce — or more than 100 employees — as it realigns its headcount amid the ongoing economic slowdown. Sprinklr started the layoff drive last week and is cutting its workforce in India, U.S. and other regions, TechCrunch learned from people familiar with the matter and confirmed with the company through an email. Be Careful Little Tongue...
I have a few memories of Sunday School from when I was a child. Most of them are bad memories, featuring stern women teachers without any degrees in theology, flannel graphs, and silly songs. Let’s face it. It was indoctrination camp for an hour every Sunday morning.
One of those songs has stuck in my head, an ominous cautionary tale for kids. One of the verses goes like this:
“O be careful little tongue what you say, O be careful little tongue what you say, For the Father up above Is looking down in love So, be careful little tongue what you say”
Interestingly, there is a lot of common sense in the song (even if it painted God as someone who could smite thee--in love, of course), encouraging children to be careful what they do, say, touch, etc. It was good advice for all then and now, especially in the social media era.
And lest you quickly ask, “Hey DrG, didn’t we just talk about this?” let me just say that we sang that song practically every Sunday. Some lessons are worth repeating, for individuals and companies alike.
Case in point: The saga of the shrimp tails in the Cinnamon Toast Crunch. Jensen Karp, an LA-based comedian and comedy writer found what looked to be shrimp tails in his favorite breakfast cereal. Worse yet, after his friend prompted him to dig farther into the box, he found things that were just gross. So he did like any normal citizen would do these days: He sent a query to General Mills (the manufacturer), and then he tweeted about it.
While the company was initially nice to him, they then used their branded Twitter account to deny any possible wrongdoing, that there was no way in hell that shrimp could have found their way into a box of cereal. Because shrimp live oceans away (literally) from any cereal manufacturing plant, right?
Done. Hands washed. Next?
Actually, General Mills wasn’t quite done, as they then asked Kemp to send over the evidence, but he has demurred. He’s willing to fork over part of it, but wants to keep some for himself, naturally. General Mills, which once earlier had a shrimp incident involving blueberries, is in disbelief that these tiny crustaceans could have popped up a second time.
Meanwhile, Amy Brown, the woman who was once the brains behind Wendy’s Twitter account and the snarky burns she posted, found herself working at Figma, which makes a vector graphics editor. She used her personal Twitter account to take a stab at President Joe Biden, whose White House account had engaged Sprinklr as a social media management tool.
“can’t stop laughing that the leader of the free world got conned into using sprinklr.“ she tweeted.
Unknown to her was the fact that Sprinklr was watching, and her employer was close to inking a deal with them. Sprinklr did not take too kindly to the slam, and demanded a take-down, also threatening to kill the Figma account..
While Brown has since left Figma, Sprinklr has been on the receiving end of much tweet-lashing for browbeating Brown. How dare someone criticize them? Sprinklr was ready to call its legal team into action, which would normally be enough to send any employee packing, and possibly seeking asylum elsewhere.
If there is anything to be learned from these two incidents--and I swear, there is no end to this stuff--it is that it behooves individuals to keep their damn mouths shut when talking about things that have professional implications, and that companies better consult their legal folks long before things escalate. In the case of General Mills, they should not have been so quick to play the denial card, while Sprinklr probably should have been a little less sensitive.
OK, a lot less sensitive.
Yes, Brown was out of line. She’s a social media professional, and should have known better. But so are the folks at Sprinklr, and they should have anticipated backlash, which now makes them look bad boys and girls. Soup Nazi, anyone?
And then there’s that ear worm I planted in your head a few minutes ago. “O be careful little tongue what you say...” Smarter words have not been spoken, thus saith your Professor.
