The plot was all over the place but that one episode where a self-driving car tries to kill the protsgonist’s brother will always be special to me <3

Speed Racer: The Next Generation fans:

I present to you the reason why Season 2 was Like That.

As many of you know, Animation Collective went under during the Hiatus. The series was taken over by Toonz Entertainment for the 2nd season. Schwarz was still involved, but much of the crew changed.

Notice anything about the plot? The conspicuous whitewashing of the cast. The obsession with robots, The shoehorned time travel plot.

Notice how it coincides with Susan Wynn’s abrupt delegation to the sidelines, appearing all of maybe twice in season 2 without a word about her character arc or backstory. Notice how Connor’s hamfisted obsession with robots ties in perfectly with this plot? The plot is literally ripped from a season 2 episode. Oh and don’t even mention season 2′s weird focus on driver safety and how it connects here. Not to mention how many season 1 plot threads were left hanging (what about Spritle. Why did he and Speed Sr never interact. How much did he know.)(Why didn’t Speed Sr ever apologize or even interact with Susan Wynn)(why did Connor, who had largely stopped hitting on Annalise all the time, suddenly regress and get a thousand times worse and creepier in season 2)(Why did X and Annalise get back together)(What ever happened to Turbo McAlister)(Did VIC ever come back)(Why did Lucy stop being the badass pilot/navigator she was in s1 and become just the love interest in s2)

SR: TNG was never wonderfully animated but season 1 had some damn good writing. Season 2 kept some of that (I’m gonna take a stab in the dark and say Larry Schwarz’s continued involvement in the show saved it from being... this) but the social commentary and the environmental themes were largely left to the wayside in season 2. What was there wasn’t quite as poignant as what was in season 1. And season 1 wasn’t exactly the next Handmaid’s Tale. 

And this trailer from 2016 has convinced me: toonz entertainment and animation collective each wanted to take the story in an entirely different direction.

I believe that the Shadow Woman was always Trixie. I don’t believe she always had the backstory she did.

I believe the villains would have been better written. Particularly the Committee villains.

I believe Zile would not have been written the way he was in s2 and I believe we would have gotten more information about who Captain Terror was.

I believe Sparky would have made another appearance. I believe that the Mach 6 engine would have actually been made public and popularized. I think Speed Sr would have been written differently for the eseries finale and I think Rex’s entire storyarc would have changed.
