Ella has always known she is trans. She wants to live as a woman, wear feminine clothing, and holds onto her identity even under the horrible treatment of her stepfamily who insist on using her deadname and pronouns. Ella may be a servant in her own home, but at least she knows who she is at heart. And finally she is given the opportunity to dress for a ball, share moments with other women, and even dance with the beautiful princess. This heartwarming novella is the best modern take on the Cinderella fairy tale I’ve read yet.
Final Thoughts
I picked this book for my latest archive review for a reason. It tells a story of a black trans woman who finds a happy ending. This month has seen black trans women forgotten, attacked, remembered, and fought for. Black lives matter. Trans lives matter. Black trans lives matter. While we in the bookish community are trying to support black authors and their stories, it’s important we make sure some of these stories are happy and have happy endings. This novella is important because it gives black trans women a fairy tale story, it gives them the glass slippers and the happy ending with the princess. Consider supporting this retelling before you read another YA fairy tale story!
