Part 3 of ?

The journeys of the St. Roch took the ship through the same channels that Franklin tried to traverse on his Arctic expeditions. So it's fitting that the exhibit includes a few Easter eggs for Arctic exploration nerds and fans of The Terror.

On the exhibit's lowest floor, around the ship's hull, there's a large map showing the paths of the St. Roch through the Northwest Passage alongside the major milestones of other expeditions. Including that one.

Upstairs, in the wheelhouse, there's another chart showing St. Roch's main service area in the western Arctic. This time, there's an Easter egg for the Due South fans.

The crew of the St. Roch weren't dispatched to find Franklin, but it seems they still did their searching.

Boat posting on main and thinking about the St. Roch voyage, only the second ship to make the Northwest Passage, and the first to do it West to East. It took 28 month to reach Halifax, NS from Vancouver, the voyage spanning from 1940-1942. It's such a recent voyage that there is video footage from it, isn't that wild?

Saint Roch, Confessor and Recluse - 16 August

Saint Roch, French noble who early developed a sympathy for the poor and sick; reported to have been born with the image of a red cross on his breast. Orphaned at age 20, he gave his fortune to the poor, and became a mendicant pilgrim; may have been a Franciscan tertiary. While on pilgrimage Roch encountered an area afflicted with plague. He stayed to minister to the sick, and affected several miraculous cures, usually by making the sign of the cross over them, but contracted the plague himself. He walked into a forest to die, but was befriended by a dog. The dog fed him with food stolen from his master’s table, and Roch eventually recovered. When Roch returned to Montpellier, France, he was arrested for being a spy. He languished in jail for five years, never mentioning his noble connections, cared for by an angel until his death.

Old-timey postcard from the 1930s of the entrance to Polygruen Studios in New Orleans (what was formerly the Shrine and Cemetery of Saint Roch), the card including insets of the cemetery’s famous miniature cats, Shakelton and P.J. Whiskers, who were immediately evicted upon Baby Gruenwald’s purchase of the property.

As the many ornate crypts and vaults were needed to house lighting and camera gear, all human remains were reverentially (when possible) removed to nearby self-storage units in White Kitchen.

Upon the failure of the accursed studios, the historic property was purchased by the St. Roch’s Cemetery Restoration Project Inc., which wasted no time in turning the facilities into a paint ball park and plague-themed laser tag supercenter (as per the community’s wishes).
