(Lego Monkie Kid) Sun Wukong x Reader
(Happy Year of the Horse!🐎)
It was a quiet night in at your apartment. Work had been long and tiring and you were eager to relax and do as little as possible. You were curled up on the couch, half dozing with the TV droning in the background, when a crash from your balcony startled you awake. The sliding door was shoved open and a familiar figured stormed into the room.
“Uh, hey Wu?” You sat up, confused and a bit concerned by his sudden visit. “I thought you and MK were going on some kind of training trip?”
He didn’t answer, didn’t even spare you a glance. Instead, he crossed the room with heavy, marching steps. As he passed, you caught the words grumbled under his breath.
“Unbelievable, after all these years…” He stopped just short of running into the wall, turned on his heel, and stomped his way back across the living room. “…just has to bring it up. He knows how much that…”
You watched him pace another lap, voice growing louder and more frantic with each step. His tail lashed wildly behind him and his hands scrubbed through his frazzled fur as he worked himself into a proper tantrum.
“…it’s not like I did a bad job or anything!”
When you tried to block his path, the monkey just stepped around you without slowing down. It was unnerving to see him so out of sorts. You were used to him being distracted in the usual hyperactive, scatterbrained way. But to be so oblivious to not even acknowledge you was a far cry from the Monkey King you knew.
“…should show more respect, after all I’ve done…”
He stumbled in place, startled by your sudden shout. It was a long enough pause for you to grab his face and make him meet your eye. Wukong blinked in surprised, as if seeing you for the first time since arriving. You smile in returned and caressing the fur along his cheeks.
After a moment, he let out a breath and relaxed into your touch. “Hey, Peaches.”
“Hey, Wu. Do you wanna tell me what happened?”
He shrugged, averting his gaze to the side. “It’s nothing.”
You rolled your eyes and led him over to the couch to sit down. “I doubt it was nothing to get you so upset.”
“It’s dumb,” he argued, flopping down with a frustrated huff. “Just Nezha being annoying, as usual.”
You hummed in sympathy, fingers combing through his fur to help him calm down. “I thought he was supposed to be help MK with training?”
Wukong grimaced. “He is. But that brat always has to get his taunts in. He was already getting on my nerves and he took it too far today. I had to leave before I got really mad and it turned into a fight.”
There was a slight hesitation before you asked, “What did he say?”
A heavy sigh answered and you immediately regretted the questions. Before you could take it back, Wukong glanced your way sheepishly.
“It was about my first job in Heaven…”
The fierce cut of his glare was only softened by the pout pulling at his mouth. “Yeah. That.”
You winced. “Sorry, I didn’t think it was that big of a deal.”
“It is when heaven constantly brings it up!” Wukong all but flung himself into your lap, arms gesturing dramatically as he regaled you with his past. “Bimawen, they said; an official title in the Celestial Court! And all the while, they were laughing at me for being so naïve. Nezha just loves to bring up my horse wrangling days any chance he gets.”
“I’m sorry, Wu. It wasn’t fair for heaven to treat you that way. And Nezha bringing it up is uncalled for.” You paused in your fur brushing to place a quick, playful kiss on his nose. “But I bet you were an adorable stable boy.”
Wukong’s pout deepened but he didn’t argue. A blush colored his cheeks and his tail flicked bashfully against the couch. He turned his head away to avoid your gaze but still leaned into your soothing pets.
“I was good at my job,” he muttered.
“I took good care of the horses.”
“That’s fair. I’m sure they miss you, too.”
“I should go visit them.”
“And turn them loose in the palace,” he mused with a wicked grin. “Then they’ll wish they still had a good stable boy.”
Dread washed over you as tales of his original rampage through heaven and subsequent punishment came to mind.
“Maybe don’t do that,” you objected as casually as your nerves would allow. “How about we just cuddle and watch TV for a bit?”
Wukong chuckled. “Works for me.” He tugged you down next to him and snuggled closer with a contented purr. “I’m retired, anyways.”
