Stephen Douglas gets drunk. Adele drives him home. She puts him in bed. He texts her that he needs help getting home. She is sitting in bed right next to him.
THIS IS SO FUCKING THEM
Saint of the Day - December 24 - St Adela Died in 730
Abbess and foundress, a disciple of St. Boniface. Adela was a Frankish princess, the daughter of King Dagobert II (r. 656-705) and sister of St Irmina. Married to a nobleman, Alberie, she became the foundress of a monastery at Pfazel, near Trčves, France, when her husband died. She founded a convent at Palatiolum near Trier and became its first Abbess, ruling with holiness, prudence, and compassion. St. Adele was a disciple of St. Boniface, the Apostle of Germany, and a letter in his correspondence is addressed to her.
i honestly can’t listen to Who Lives Who Dies Who Tells Your Story, it reminds me of the fact that stephen and adele were only married for five years before he died and she lived another 40 years after
“Have no apprehensions about my health, I shall not exert myself much hereafter. I shall be prudent for your sake, if I had no other inducement. Fear not that I shall forget you because I write no oftener. You are ever present in my mind and filling my thoughts. While I am struggling for my Country it is a great stimulant to my exertions that the moment the Battle is over and the victory won I can rush to the presence of the one I love and lay down all my trophies at your feet.”
“I was interested and amused with your description of Mr. Guthrie’s charming visit to you. You may have no fear that I will get jealous of him for I will manage to pay you off for all such flirtations by my attentions and devotions to the bright eyed girls of the Praries. So on this point we will be even and consider the account balanced when I return, letting bye gones be by-gones. You must write often and tell me all the news and gossip of the city. I will permit you to scold me as much as you please in your letters about my not writing oftener, provided you will not be guilty of the same offence toward me of which you complain. Have no fear of my health or safety.”
“I am sorry if I succeeded in arousing your jealousy of the bright eyed Girls of the Praries. I am sure you will like them better when you know them and find how harmless they are, As you seem to be of the opinion that a grown middle aged man may show their gallantry to the young ladies with entire impunity and propriety I had supposed that you would be gratified to know that I was practicing on the principles you seem to delight in defending. However we will discuss this point at our leisure when we meet again.”
-Stephen Douglas to Adele Cutts, September-November, 1856
the letters douglas sent to adele while he was stumping for buchanan in 1856 before their engagement was made public are so... so cute, jesus christ, I feel like I’m going to get a cavity reading them. for one, he wrote to her every day, even if it was three lines that were nearly illegible because of the steamboat’s jostling. instead of getting cross at her for not doing the same, he would just get really whiney and plaintive, and he wrote about getting so excited whenever he got anything from her on his travels. he always called her letters charming, and said that they gave him the energy he needed to continue on what he said was an essentially useless canvas.
they also had a very saucy one-upmanship going on with regards to flirting with other people, she with various washington callers and he with the ‘bright eyed girls of the prairie’.
I’ll transcribe a bit of them tonight, because I need you all to feel the Douglas love.
“his second wife was his soul mate” martin quitt confirmed as stadele shipper trash
apparently when adele got really ill after her miscarriage douglas literally stopped going to work for weeks to take care of her and ended up beating himself up about it so badly that he became seriously ill as well, and they both just spent a few weeks at home being sick and recuperating together
