the larson class starbase defender

type 5 destroyer

coming out of the 4 years war, starfleet chose to dedicate a single ship class towards starbase defense. the larson was built to fill this role, acting essentially as a flying weapons platform. the nacelle was almost always under-powered, as the ship type was only intended for starbase defense, and only had a warp 2 rated core. sporting a deflector dedicated to tachyon bursts, it could fire 5 time before it risked burnout. the underside of the saucer sported 7 phase banks, while the single topside phaser bank housed a miniaturized phase beam cannon, an innovation that would eventually be implemented in the enterprise sub-class,

Background: Near Sector 001 when reported a shipwide technological failure and a runaway core. A distress call was sent out, received by the Enterprise. The ship was losing life support and interference from the warp core made transporters useless. Separation procedures had begun but power loss had prevented access to space suits. The Enterprise shuttled a rescue party in consisting of Saavik and Valeris. Together they restored secondary life support and Saavik attempted to restore containment (and save six people unconscious in engineering) while Valeris prepared to separate the saucer from the rest of the ship. When it seemed unlikely that Saavik would restore containment in time Valeris initiated the emergency separation (per Saavik’s orders). Saavik was able to restore containment with only seconds to spare.
