everyone is SOOO good and will fight tooth and nail for just scraps. It’s insane.
Honestly, the best advice I have for aspiring actors from having watched all these people over the years is this: do not go to NYC or LA first. Just don't. Everyone else has, you are fighting for so few parts with so many talented people in competition. And the one thing that everyone wants to see you have -- experience on your resume -- is so much harder to get here.
Go to Chicago. Go to Minneapolis.
Start in a smaller market where there will be fewer people vying for the good roles. Get some experience under your belt, some contacts in the business, some roles on your resume.
THEN move to NY or LA. You'll start with an advantage over the people who come fresh off the boat.
This city is so, so painfully expensive and the competition is so, so painfully high. You will move here to pursue your craft and end up perfecting your waitressing skills. If you can even get a job as a waitress, because most restaurants require at least a year of experience waiting tables in NYC before they will hire you to wait tables in NYC. Think on that one for a second.
