Un poco de historia, Stairsteps comenzaron siendo The Five Stairsteps, uno de los grupos más interesantes del soul de Chicago de mediados de los años sesenta, aunque quedaron eclipsados por los Jackson 5 a final de década. "The First Family of Soul", era el apodo de los Stairsteps antes de que se asociara a los Jackson. El grupo lo formaban los hermanos Burke: Keni, Clarence Jr., James, Dennis y Alohe. También su hermano menor Cubie. Tras ganar un concurso de talentos, entraron en la órbita del gran Curtis Mayfield, por entonces líder de The Impressions, figura clave en su desarrollo artístico.

Su canción más conocida, sampleada y versionada fue "O-o-o-h Child" de 1970, un himno de esperanza que llegó al Top 10 estadounidense. Entre otros muchos la incluyeron en sus repertorios The Spinners, Nina Simone, Laura Nyro, Valerie Carter, Richie Havens y posteriormente The Posies.

En cualquier caso, el disco suyo que más ha valorado al alza en los últimos años ha sido "2nd Resurrection". Durante años fue una joya oculta para coleccionistas antes de ser debidamente reeditado y redescubierto como merecía.
