Why I am wary of Human space travel

I often dream about exploring the stars and finding new worlds and races like in Star Trek. But in truth, I am afraid of space travel. Not because i'm afraid of being sucked out into the void or encountering another stronger, scarier race. I'm afraid that we will discover a new world with sentient life on it, but they are at the level of technology that we are here in 2017. Seing them as an inferior race, we will claim this planet as our own, just like we did with the Native Americans in the 1400's. We will inflict even more pain than we did back then, and do it all again. I'm scared of humanity and our feeling of entitlement to everyting we find. We always here of these tales of a Galatic Empire ruled by an Evil Tyrant and we are always, "OMG THAT IS SO TERRIBLE." I'm scared of humanity becoming that Evil Empire and inflivting pain on billions if not trillions of lives. Even though it is almost impossible, i pray that there is no other life in the universe so that we don't inflict any pain on anyone but ourselves.
