The Sufis still whirl in a sacred dance or active meditation (mystical Islam) to connect with Allah, God, the Universe, the Source, the Creative Force, Love, Life, Fate or any other way you would prefer to call it.
Our North-Western European pagan ancestors did, too.
May pole dances are a distant reminder, but (ritual) dancing was prohibited by Charles the Great (Charlemagne), who became king of the Franks in 771 and dedicated his life to converting forcing the European tribes to Christianity.

SKY FROM THE EQUATOR This long exposure image, by Kwon O Chul, was made during a complete night by a custom made panoramic film camera; it has captured the startrails around the south celestial pole. The image was taken in July 2010. The photographer was very close to the equator on high altitude slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania when shooting this image. The equatorial region is the only place on Earth where the celestial poles are found right at the horizon. Kilimanjaro is an inactive volcano and the highest mountain in Africa. -TEL http://www.twanight.org/newTWAN/photos.asp?ID=3002976&Sort=Region Kwon, O Chul, TWAN- http://astrokorea.com/kwon572/
