You can be as mad at me as you want. I got angry because it's a topic I deal with a lot of shit about myself. My friend's husband is not the only tankie I've met who likes to shit on people who work to provide food or shelter to homeless people because they're "pushing back the revolution." So I was arguing against them in my mind more than trying to persuade people on Tumblr.

But for the record, I wasn't focusing on the time periods you mentioned. Soviet housing's issues began in the 1920s and survived until the 1980s; the PRC's problems survived into the 1990s and beyond. I'm not just hitting them when they're down, and I'm not saying they were 100% wrong. I'm just saying--they had massive decades-long problems, and we need to know what those problems were if we want to try anything like them.

My bad, I also got really heated, and was also mostly responding to arguments I've heard in the past that yours just happened to remind me of, even though that wasn't really fair to what you were actually saying. I think I was even aware at some level that you were talking in broader terms, but I just steamrolled past that thought 😅😬

I think I was venting a lot of frustration with how some people don't treat the USSR (and PRC) as fully... human, but just as a talking point in some holier-than-thou debate that doesn't actually take their unique histories into account (if my very salty reply didn't make that sentiment obvious aha....). Tbh though the sort of people you also seem to be frustrated with probably also fall into that category - they fetishize systems and ignore their flaws to the point of also denying the people within those systems their humanity.

The word tankie made me see red (pun intended) because among other things I've been called one for hot takes like "Maybe the USSR wasn't 100% evil" and "Hey the current Russian administration is actually very complicated with historical fears to consider" but it's also important for me to remember that a significant portion of the context it's used in is about weird Maoists/Stalinists who don't want to see any flaws in their system. (And for the record, Chinese communists from what I've gathered actually, you know. Acknowledge historical failings and try to improve. But Western leftists seem to have lost the memo...)

And you're right, there were a lot of problems (altho russia also had problems in The 90s... and I'm not sure what the housing situation has been like under Putin? But it's not like tankie-fetishists actually care about Russia lmao)

Postscript: Russia in the 1920s was also coming out of a World War and then Civil War and then Lenin up and died creating a nasty power struggle between Trotsky and Stalin. The country can't catch a break 😪

It’s hilarious how radfems who claim the right to criticize anything and everything about other people suddenly mantle like offended chickens at any suggestion that THEY might be criticized for the way they treat, let’s see... trans women, trans men, all men, bisexuals, heterosexuals, and lesbians who are into the “wrong kind” of sex.
