Happy Worldbuilding Wednesday! Today I want to talk about sleep and naps. Are naps accepted? How is sleep seen? Any deities related to sleep? Any rituals that help have a restorative slumber? Any population that only sleeps during the day? Do people even sleep? (tag @fields-of-ink)

So sleep for the shapeshifters is really important, especially for the higher-ranking ones, like the alphas and the elders. It’s primarily how they communicate with their Ancestors. I think there’s some kind of pseudo-ritual the alphas/elders use to get to sleep when they specifically need to communicate with the Ancestors outside of just going to bed at the usual time, I just haven’t quite figured out what that is...

Getting to this now because it has been. A week. A time. Ah. But!
I’ve been thinking about this one and I gotta say, the pack system and the communication there is one of the most interconnected things in my worldbuilding. There’s a lot of interaction between national packs (the packs that lead the countries and reside in their respective country’s capital) and the High Council and the High Elder. It gets a little more complicated when humans get thrown into the mix, but as it is the network is expansive. Europe especially is the most interconnected, by sheer number of countries. They have a well-established communication network that they’ve been using among themselves for centuries; they had to move it underground during the purges, but once that was over they were able to bring it back to the surface and refine it.
America is the only country on the North American continent to have any kind of solid interaction with Europe (Canada and Mexico, less so, mostly as needed and usually only with the Council). But Verna doesn’t like to be out of the loop and thus keeps one hand in it, and she’s got a growing number of ambassadors to hold up communication for her. The European packs don’t necessarily rely on ambassadors among each other, given their proximity and pre-established network. But since America is across the ocean, is an incredibly large country, and Verna can’t keep track of the happenings in her own country and those of Europe, she has ambassadors to handle those affairs for her. They report back to her, of course, but they largely handle things independent of her.
Wind Runner, the current High Elder, has direct lines of communication with the national alphas. All of them have her contact information, all secured, and only given to the alphas. Verna is one of the ones she keeps in contact with the most (both because of the distance and also they have a past friendship).
(I also haven’t quite figured out the role of the other council members yet.)

Short answer: Not die. Survive.
Long answer: The shapeshifter-led shifter purges had been going on for the better part of a thousand years, give or take, and for that time everyone lived in absolute fear. There was not knowing if there would even been any of them left to see tomorrow, and during that time the only thing they hoped for was to survive. The purges started in Europe, which prompted a lot of shapeshifters to flee the continent on the well-timed excursions to America, during the time of the first settlements. Unfortunately, the purge followed them there, and it started all over again. The European populations had been decimated, with only a handful left, and the American population followed suit. After a while everyone really started wishing for two things: a) for Elna, the High Elder, to do something and b) someone to put and end to Lucien’s rampage.
Well, only one of those things happened, but it wasn’t until the early 2020′s when Verna finally got the ball rolling on that rebellion. Elna remained relatively silent throughout the whole thing, even when her own daughter was murdered, and as you can imagine, that pissed a lot of people off.
Their goal after that became to rebuild and regroup and organize themselves as best they could with who was left. It was incredibly rocky and uneasy and Elna’s lack of involvement made it worse (as did Hargen’s shitty views) but they figured themselves out eventually.
