Starborne - Chapter One

Starborne is about 5 main heroes who need to fight back the monster destroying their world

Hypothetically, if I were to draw mini one-off Doghaus-esque/Lavender Variety-esque comics, what story would you want to see them from the most?

I personally think Wish I Were or The Damn Santiagos would work best, mainly bc they have the most "filler" to them- I mean TDS is literally just a sitcom with more violence, sex, trauma, and existentialism

Also there's no TKI here, bc I know that's what people would probably wanna see the most. I love TKI, I really do. But I wanna give more public focus to my other personal stories that were actually born from me and not a whole other rp project, that way I have more time to polish TKI out and have it feel more individual and 'right'.

Silon emerges.

Silon has a unique ability to "Slip" into the fabric of her home dimension, the Absence. She achieves this by humming a particular alternating frequency that breaks the "surface tension" of the Absence, which she describes as being much like a great, endless lake, allowing her to basically swim behind the scenes and cross great distances. Upon stopping, she can emerge however gracefully or mundanely as she might choose. She learned this ability from her pet Slipserpents, who have a natural ability to do this.

There are a couple of limits to this. She must be perfectly in tune with the frequency, so any waver or tremor in her humming can spit her out prematurely, or keep her from "Slipping" in the first place. She cannot bring others with her; she doesn't know their frequencies, and even if she did, they have to sing or hum it themselves, she can't pull double duty. She's not able to just go ANYWHERE. Some sections of the Absence are kind of... "upstream" for lack of a better term. Out of her reach. But most of the dimension is her oyster.

This pic was intended to show this off, but it's not exactly the best showcase. I'm also not 100% sure about the visual. It's simple, maybe too simple, but I was just not able to work out the first idea I had for it.

Last Minute Mermay Post (Aka Official Azalea Refs)

YEAAAA BABYYYYYY GOT THIS DONE WOOHOO BUZZERBEATER FR FR

If you guys have been on Artfight or my Toyhouse then you'd probably have noticed her human form there. BUT! I really really wanted to post this when I had both of her forms done.

I'd like to point out that Azalea is a deformed anomaly. Mermaids in Starborne generally can't go back and forth between a human form and mermaid form, but Azalea received a blessing from her mother to be able to be human, after her mom fell in love with the land life but knew she couldn't ever quite be a part of it. Hm, doesn't that sound familiar.

Unfortunately, this blessing to allow Lea's transformations resulted in way more suffering than her mother intended (again, sounds familiar), and being the jack of all trades and master of none isn't as good as it may sound. You can see that Lea's legs aren't necessarily the strongest, and, unfortunately, neither is her tail. It's basically just extra skin and scales that grow over her legs when they're pressed together underwater, and her tail fin just grows out from her foot. Yes, it's uncomfortable. Yes, in some cases it's also painful. And yes, that is why she has that 'seam' down the front of her tail. The skin and scales slowly retract after Azalea's legs dry off, or at least aren't submerged anymore. Unfortunately, that drying process can take up to an hour to be completed, and even then she struggles to walk at all afterwards.

So, that's Lea's deal in simple terms. She struggles to fully connect to both mermaid and landmen cultures, but regardless is a strong advocate for peace between the two species and uses her cursed blessing as an aid in that regard. Feel free to ask any questions you have about her! Eventually I'll release an in-depth guide to mermaids in Starborne, including their anatomy, culture, special qualities, and more!

Realized I don't have any Starborne characters that consistently wear a dress or look as if they're wearing a dress

But she's meant to get a huge redesign and that redesign doesn't have a dress

But at least this helps me out for Azalea, she's a pretty fem girlie pops

Now it's just a matter of how long the skirt is

I'm curious if writing the Starborne prequel made you change anything about the main story at all?

A couple small things, although they're mostly just things that helped me fill in gaps from before.

For one, I actually came up with the main setting of this place through writing the prequel: Las Luches, "brightest city in the world"... actually only the brightest city in America but still

Another is the general society. A lot of them are a lot more open about sexuality, bc I'm following the trend of more open sexuality being socially accepted as time goes on. Like it went from ankles being scandalous to showing off calves and then thighs and all the more. Yes it unfortunately still pertains a lot to women. No I don't like that very much, however this is meant to be a semi-realistic dystopia. There are public sex/kink emporiums and a lot of talk about sexual health that gets corrupted and loses its meaning.

Maya no longer works at the sweets shop I original had her work at; she now works in a pizza parlor run by her sister Paloma. It's called Paloma's Pizza. Maya is also a character who debuts in the prequel rather than main story.

I've also figured out that there's unfortunately a uh. Problem with people and corpses in Las Luches- a lot of the vigilantism that the Strays gang handles before involves combating that stuff bc it's unfortunately very very common

I think that's about it in terms of changes to the current story- I think a lot of the current story actually is what drives the prequel instead, if that makes sense. There's not much.

Oh, and some new things with Astrea:

1. In the prequel, she's actually called Reia or Rei. It's a name given to her by Saigen, her former handler.

2. I'm thinking about giving her streaks in her hair or an underdye instead of the straight fade, as it'd diversify her from Ashe a little more. I've also contemplated giving her a bit more purple in her Kinesis and appearance; I'd say a deep, gentle purple is her favorite color probably. As she progresses through the series, she probably gets purple in her hair as well. It kinda relates to how older galaxies with older stars look a bit more red than newer, blue ones.
