Spoilers for StarBoundSMP lore on 4/10/26 - Talking about Epsilon!
So... the black hole's galaxy has finally dimmed.
I think that there's something very important about Epsilon's final sacrifice. He was back where he was long ago, fighting that age-old enemy... but for a reason other than it merely being his task. No; This time, the fight was for what he loved.
The being who spent so much of it's life not knowing what love was, not knowing how to be a person, finally felt it and lived it out to it's extent. Love is self-sacrificial... if it isn't, it's covetous and selfish, something we would hardly call "love" and are more likely to call "obsession" or "infatuation". One could argue the fighting was through his protocol, but he made the decision to activate that protocol. He knew the dangers, he knew the risk... but he still activated it.
Epsilon's story greatly revolves around what it means to be a person versus a weapon. Epsilon is many things: a weapon, an Ianguardian [or however you spell it], the last of it's kind, a person with the blood of millions on his hands, but..., he's also a friend, a protector, a lover. He learned how to feel with that brief connection with Daiv/Skye, and seeing those memories... and those affections and emotions grew. Then, he almost sealed his fate when he chose to go down with his ship, but then there was Navi's voice, calling and begging him, showing him an emotion stronger than what he'd seen in the memories: love.
And he took that love and returned it in his final actions: protecting what he loves. But when his hard shell was crumpling, his organs being eaten, he expressed that in a softer manner- with a kiss.
And then he was gone.
