as far as i can tell, the texas thing was stopped YAY and doma has been given the boot ALSO YAY
I was awake until 4AM for the Texas thing. I know y'all went to bed early so the short version: Wendy Davis filibustered. The Texas GOP tried to stop here. There was a debate about the veracity of stopping her and how germane her filibuster was. There was a shitton of amazing snark from her fellow women senators.
At, like, 5 to midnight, the fucking crowd started filibustering. As in they made so much noise and cheering that they could call roll to do the vote. But then we got word from the AP (remember them, they're on the shitlist now) that the bill went through. The Lt. Gov claimed they started voting right before midnight. The democrats and... you know, the 200K people watching the fucking livestream knew otherwise.
Then shit gets interesting. The GOP acted like they were done, the bill was passed, yay. But on the official record online, someone found the write-up for the bill said that the vote was started after midnight. Which invalidates it.
14 minutes later, the website was edited to show it was done before midnight. But the internet saw and we knew and I'm not kidding-- apparently someone got the print-outs of the edit to the dems who started passing them around for all to see.
So there was a closed door session and the Lt Gov came out and admitted the bill had been struck down.
No major outlet was covering this. CNN was talking about fucking MUFFINS (not kidding). We had livestream and the Texas Tribune's twitter account to clear shit up.
So what I'm saying is that
the fucking people of Austin filibustered that fucking bill
the republicans tried to rule that putting on a back brace was grounds to stop Wendy Davis but thought that the midnight rule didn't apply to them
social media literally saved Texas from voter fraud. It is because 200K people were actively watching this happen that it was stopped.
