All Tomorrows timeline & audiobook videos - watched these awhile ago. wasn't sure i wanted to write about not-quite humans since i haven't seen this in fantasy except as anthromorphized animals & this will still have horror elements

can't remember which video i watched first, but this is a pretty good explanation of the deal with alia from dune. my MC's situation is entirely intentional though

The children of Evera hold themselves very highly. “We protect the balance.” A mantra they will oft repeat. Death is a part of that balance. We know it will come for us, the followers of Cadervo, just the same. Our patron asks a different task than the grand Lady. When the balance is threatened a quick blade does as nicely as their months of talking, or stony indifference until the sky is raining fire. Our roles are active without fables to condone our inaction. This is due to Cadervo’s own role as the right hand of the Lady of Death, Helvica. When the threads of life are cut She raises Her hand to open the way to the underworld’s halls. Cadervo rides out on her nivirren, a steed so dark it pains mortal eyes to look upon it, to bring the soul home. 

We are the blade. 

Cadervo the hilt.

Helvica the hand that wields it, while welcoming us with the other. Our role doesn’t need the glamour of holiness or poetry. If we are called, we will serve.
