Are you interested in getting in to the anime medium or do you have a Friend who is and don’t know where to start? Well here are the top 6 best anime to get you started. Each of these is a great example of sub genre they fall in to and after watching them I’m sure you’ll either be hooked on anime or at least have a really good idea of what this medium is all about. So let’s get started.
1. Akira: This 1988 cyberpunk classic written and directed by Otomo, Katsuhiro is a first for many Otaku. With its ground breaking visuals and amazing story it saw great success outside of Japan when anime was relatively unknown and introduced an entire generation to the wonders of anime
2. Ah! My Goddess: This was my intro to the world of romance/harem anime. This series was first released in 1993 with a 5 episode Ova, a feature film and again in 2005 with a full series release. Its a bit goofy very endearing and all time favorite of mine.
3: Cowboy Bebop: This cult classic series released in 1998 as an original anime produced by Sunrise. Set in the near future this Sci-Fi classic offers great characters, story, music and animation. It also features some of the best budding work in the history of Anime through its choice of Voice talent.
4: Death Note: One of the newest anime on this list Death Note spawned a phenomenon that overtook the anime world in 2006. This supernatural thriller is a nail biter from start to finish that took the world by storm. Just don’t watch the Net Flix film.
5: Ghost in the Shell: This amazing franchise started in 1995 with the ground breaking film directed by Oshii, Mamoru and based on Masamune, Shiros visionary work. As series Ghost in the Shell has inspired many creative works since to include The Matrix and the newest Blade Runner. Stand Alone Complex is one of my go too anime when I feel like a re-watch.
6. Full Metal Panic: This series is a non serious take on the Mecha genre that first appeared in 2002 and was recently revived for a third run this spring. Mecha anime as a whole are a huge feature in the anime landscape and I chose this one because it is a full series that is fun to watch and never takes its self too seriously (unlike Evangelion). For this reason I think it makes a great introduction to the Mecha genre.
Well there it is the full list. If by the point you’ve watched all six of these anime and still aren’t hooked then I can’t help you. I decided to stop at six because I feel each of these shows are the best representatives of their specific genres and give you a really great feel for what anime as a medium has to offer. if you’d like some more suggestions you can always look at my current season lists (just make sure its the mid season round up for the best take on these shows) or scroll all the way down to my top 10 anime of all time. I did put a lot of thought in to this list in order to share with you what I thought would be the best shows to get you well on your way to getting started or for sharing your love of anime with a friend.
