Published in 1886, Francis Galton essentially used a statistical concept--that wasn't "discovered" until 1900 by Pearson--to prove his point relating to biology. He didn't even feel the need to prove the stats of it and just went on proving the biology. The chi-square and linear regression he used didn't become commonplace for decades, but he just assumed it was basic shit.
Also, he's basically saying that kids tend to be way more average than their parents. AKA we all will never be as extraordinary as our parents. Literally.
Genetics, here to demand your humility and respect for your parents since about the mid-1800s.
Lastly, everything is driven towards the mean. Regression towards the mean. Really, all we should want in life is to be average, to be mediocre. Because that's what we are all trying to do anyways. It's what we're evolving to do.

Mille morceaux de moi s'étalent autour de vous, Dois-je les retrouver ?
I'm almost done with my Statistics class!. I've completed 31 Projects, 19 chapters of homework, 5 quizzes, 5 summaries to respond to, 36 surveys, and I'm sure I'm forgetting something. I hate this class, it was so much work. I'm either going to end it with an A or A-, but I could honestly care less.
All that's left to do is write an essay, read a chapter out of some statistics book for my final, one more assignment, a survey, and a summary to respond to by the end of this week.
Once again, I remind you that I know nothing of Mr Revere, or his conversations, or his habits or beliefs, his writings (if he has any) or his personal life. All I know is this bit of metadata, based on membership in some organizations. And yet my analytical engine, on the basis of absolutely the most elementary of operations in Social Networke Analysis, seems to have picked him out of our 254 names as being of unusual interest.
