The State Coach, Diamond Jubilee coach is at 12:04
If I had to pick just one object to represent the history of Britain then this would be it -- the Gold State Coach that carried the Queen on her Coronation Day. The history of Britain is pretty much the history of its monarchy, so it's either this or the Imperial State Crown. It's not the most comfortable of rides, though, because those wagon wheels are just wood and metal rims and bounce over every little stone in the road. If the Queen had to do the whole thing again today then she'd probably prefer to do it in her Range Rover.
Sir William Chambers, Design for the State Coach, 1760
The gilded eight horse-drawn State Coach, 1760,
Designed by William Chambers (1723-96) and made by the coachmaker Samuel Butler; featuring painted panels by Giovanni Cipriani (1727-85) and richly gilded carved sculpture by the carver Joseph Wilton (1722-1803), the gilder Henry Pujolas and the metal chaser George Coyte.
Three cherubs on the roof (representing England, Ireland and Scotland) support the Imperial Crown and four tritons, one at each corner (representing Britain's imperial power).
The body of the coach is slung by braces covered with Morocco leather with gilt buckles. The interior is lined and upholstered with velvet and satin.
Weighing almost four tonnes and requiring eight horses to pull it, it has carried every monarch to their coronation since 1821.
The Royal Collection of the Gold State Coach.
This is a state coach, also known as a Landau (ca. 1830).
It was a vehicle for the nobility. The hood folds back to provide a better view of the occupants when necessary. This one was designed as the State Coach of King William IV, whose Queen, Adelaide, was the aunt of the future Queen Victoria. It was drawn by four large bay horses in full ceremonial harness with two coachmen and two footmen in state livery, with a man riding the right rear horse.
Its speed would rarely be more than walking pace. It was heavy and had no mechanical brakes. The footmen and the horses provided the stopping power. The two rear horses were fitted with special harness and trained as "brake-horses" (from where we have the term "break-horsepower") and on instruction would lean against the forward movement of the coach to stop it. The footmen would simultaneously step off the little platform to the rear and place wedges at the wheels.
The pole which runs from front to rear underneath is known as a "perch". It was a feature of carriage building of the period and was combined with steel springs and leather suspension to give a reasonably comfortable ride. However it tends to swing from side to side giving the effect of being at sea. Note the straps attached tot he perch to counteract this.
