morning darling
To Stede Bonnet. Complicated, hard-headed. Really quite irritating at times... and now free. Long may he roam.
rewatching episode 8 and going insane over calico jack saying ed is "a real pirate, and not one of those storebought types" and just sideeying stede.
and the little sad face stede makes. like people in this show keep subtily insulting stede, thinking that he wont notice, but he does notice it! he just didnt say anything in return! exept this time he does, and asks jack where his ship is, a question thats clearly sensitive to jack.
he put up with this shit for so long, since he was a kid and i think thats whats so compelling about his character and the development ofmd gives him. because in being a pirate he gains confidence in himself and becomes his own man, no matter if he gets picked on or not.
the finale also reflects that, where he leaves his material possesions behind, that he only aquired because of his fathers money, and now he can truly be himself and claim his own accomplishments without the help of anyone elses success.
I just think if Ed could see Stedes new Look that would fix all their problems and also they would immediately fuck.
there is just, really no indication stede's liking of colors or luxury or any other frivolous things- including peace and talking- were any kind of façade or something he wanted to get rid off or as something the narrative wants him to go beyond, and its pissing me off to see that in the tags. in fact, they are literally presented as things that bring him joy- showing the talk about fashion in the montage while mary says "understanding and enjoying my idiosyncrasies/ interests", While Ed tells him he wants to live like Fancy instead of a pirate, stede just says he wants to be "more" like blackbeard, and his whole goal is self defined as "Gentleman Pirate" and "Polite Menace", strong and nice and soft and daring, and presenting his change in the end of episode 10 as meaning he will "go beyond this" or "stop being so high strung" is. extremely bizzare, not what the narrative implies, and kind of, umm, really homophobic.
Like. girl. that's Ed. the one that is having A Gender Time is Ed. Seeing one sequence with less fancy clothes and his hair pulled back does not "oooh hes finally gonna be A Real Tough Guy im so happy for him <3" make.
I am unwell
I love that I coined Stede 2.0 bc I'm gatekeeping it from the bearded Stede freaks. none of them are allowed to use it.
would it KILL people to not be weird about stede's End Of Episode 10 costuming change. I don't mean going "ooh hes sexy now oh he looks hotter" thats ok thats fine have fun (i liked his stupid lil curl more) or going "i cant wait to see a more confident stede" but like. i am definitely seeing some takes veering Weird about the costuming, appearance element, and honestly personality too. a "ooh ahh Strong Man is when you dont have. colors or tights in your outfit." "doing your hair meticulously = snobby tryhard"........... girl youre starting to sound, emm, kinda fucking homophobic
