Re: difficulty with Ashton.

I love Tal and the characters we get and I love Ash, but I think some of us are struggling with that conversation with Ash and Laudna because it ticks the box of “mansplaining” loneliness and trauma to a woman who was traumatized and forcibly alone for longer in her life than she has been with others.

Like you, I suspect that Tal is playing a longer game here to make Ash realize that they don’t have a monopoly on trauma. Nor does FCG (who I assume is the other person they meant in the convo). That said, I think you’re right on the mark in your comments and I just wanted to say yes and for those of us really struggling with that conversation.

agreed! i think it was definitely intentional on tal's part and i'm p curious to see how the way that conversation played out will come back around, because it could've very easily escalated into an argument or some meaner, sharper thing, but laudna just was not biting. i wonder if that's what ashton wanted or if it was the total opposite, if it surprised them or not

which btw, to make it about my best girl for a bit, speaks a lot to her patience and depth of empathy (and maybe even her age). ashton said a lot of things that were misguided at best and cruel at worst, and it's Important that she took those things, sat with them, and gave him honest and genuine responses about her pain while still firmly indicating that he isn't the only one with this kind/level of baggage. instead of getting down on herself or getting mad at ashton, she turned it into an opportunity to say that opening herself up to kindness and care was one of the best decisions she ever made. she saw straight through to the root of all the things they said, and she offered a suggestion that might alleviate their negative feelings, from her own personal experience, without holding any of that conversation against him. is that what ashton wanted, or did they want to be yelled at and demoralized? not sure! but i'm willing to bet it was more forgiveness and understanding than they bargained for so it'll be interesting to see where that goes later

When you’re in your editing phase, how do you quantify your progress? When writing initially it’s easy to say, “today I wrote 1,000 words,” but when editing I’m struggling to feel like I’ve accomplished anything if I’m not generating new words. Which, I’m sure you know isn’t a great way to mark editing progress. How are you measuring your progress right now?

Well just doing the work is progress, and you can always quantify things by pages, but the risk there is that you start skimming pages and not doing the deep work that you may need to do, because it doesn’t feel as productive to really work out something over three pages as it does to get twenty pages behind you.

More specifically to your question: every day and every project is different, but my progress on rewrites is usually counted in pages done and hours worked. But because I started doing daily words here when I was on my first draft, I’ve kept the same format. It’s sort of like punching out at the end of the day for me, and I like the ritual.

If I counted today in pages, I made it through about eight pages, and I added about two and a half, maybe almost three. I worked for about four hours before I ran out of gas (because I spent three hours before I got started doing boring Adulting things, like going to the store, taking care of my dogs, answering emails, approving comments on my blog, etc.) 

In LibreOffice, I’m on page 68 of 139, so I have a ways to go before I finish the first rewrite, and can hand it off to some beta readers for feedback before I go at it again.

Can I just say that the scene with Lady Eve sucking the fluid out of the dead person was creepy to a level that every “villain” should aspire to. That suctioning while she’s talking so calmly and casually threatening Whale? Everything about her in that scene was perfection.

Listen…I don’t even know for sure now if he was really dead. HIs eyes opened right at the end there. I tell you, the subtly in which she is ruthlessly evil is truly chilling.

The threat she made to him about grinding him into dust. (Which is a very real thing that still happens)

I’ll be honest I really don’t like the dude in general. I’m not sure there’s any way to redeem the guy but then I don’t have a lot of patience for the dudebro characters.

Sometimes I can deal with those characters but he is not one of them for me either so I understand

My wife sat next to me with her jaw slack at the sheer terror in that scene. I cackled like a kid who got her favorite toy for Christmas. It was perfect and Jill Scott is perfect in this role. Also re: the eyes opening I assumed that was a suction situation cause she was removing all the fluids. Regardless of what it was, it was iconic and I am petrified of Lady Eve and I love every second of her.

I love a good villain and a good Lady Villian is even better so I was right there with you. Hype and terrified lol

Sorry to jump on here (and I’m an episode behind) but if they want to sell Abby and Buck as anything potentially legitimate he needs to pick up the phone and call her. It’s weird and off-putting that he never seems to speak to her unless she instigates it. Bleh.

Real talk if he did this week I spaced on it outta interest in everything else but it’s possible? I don’t wanna spoil since you haven’t seen tonight but for me I agree but he’s just off putting in general for me and the only character I don’t care about to invest in

9. What’s one show you thought you’d hate but turned out to really enjoy? I don’t think I have many. I can usually tell what I’d hate and avoid it. I think I enjoyed Battlestar Galáctica a lot more than I anticipated.

12. Have you ever watched a show just for a specific actor? Did you enjoy it? I mean I watched an episode of Black Mirror for Hayley Atwell and I’m scarred for life. I do tend to check out shows I know will have my favorites in it but it’s not usually just one person. Other people tend to show up too.

21. If you could be a guest star on any show which one would it be? I already answered this one but I think it’d be cool to pop up on queer eye. Someone I went to college with was on season two.

26. Favorite TV Show theme song? Ok this is the part where I tell you in college I had a compilation CD collection of the 100 greatest TV show theme songs. Different ones inspire different moods. Like The Golden Girls makes me think of my grandma and having tea with a friend in college and grad school. Frasier and Law and Order SVU make me think of pulling all nighters. One Day at a Time reminds me to take a breath and I’ll get through. All in the Family reminds me that my bff does the greatest Edith bunker impression you’ve ever heard. Living Single makes me miss the 90s. So you know I got a lot of faves.
