I picked up one of the best wireless headsets out for PC (and ps4) today and ohhhhh man <3. Had to treat myself today so I went and got them and coffee/food while I was out. After playing games with it and actually hearing the 7.1 surround sound and just little details like rain it was worth it. Now finally listening to all kinds of music super loud on them and it sounds even better. BUT it kinda hurts my right ear a little bit after alooong time, not unbearable but fuuuuck. Might be able to adjust it somehow, but my ears are kinda big lol :-/. I still think I’m keeping them though, wireless is sooo nice and the quality is one of the best according to most reviews.
Accessories | Steelseries Arctis 7 Vs Nintendo Switch
Aztán összedugtam a Nintendo Switch-csel..
Steelseries Arctis 7 vs Logitech G933 Artemis Spectrum - A Casual Gamer’s POV
When I became a father to a baby girl a couple months ago… one change I had to make was doing anything around the house with absolute ninja like silence. Movies? TV shows? Games? All done at volume one, with night mode and reduced dynamic sounds. There was no such thing as appreciating the music, sound effects or dialogues. Back in December when I finally beat Zelda: Breath of the Wild, a sudden thought popped in my head; I really need some wireless headphones.
Now for those who have a Nintendo Switch, the Switch’s support for USB wireless audio didn’t happen too long ago. I forgot the exact firmware, but in any case, I began researching the various gaming headsets available at or below $150 and through my research, two stood out to me. The Logitech G933 Artemis Spectrum and the Steelseries Arctis 7. Both are around the same price range MSRP. Both are available in refurbished condition on eBay at signficantly cheaper cost as well. And both, design-wise are on the opposite ends of the spectrum.
With Monster Hunter: World released, I needed a gaming headset now more than ever, the below are my thoughts on the two, after spending some time with each of them. This is a basic comparison of the two wireless headsets. I’m not going to go into the specifications, you can find that on the manufacturer website.
Note: With my Switch, I also bought the Creative BT-W2 bluetooth audio transmitter to try out. It works fine, my Sony WH-1000XM2 headphones connected to it with no issues. The only reason I needed another solution was because I was annoyed at Nintendo not giving an option for owners to switch between USB audio or TV. One must unplug the USB for the audio to return to the TV. I was also annoyed at the fact that my 1000XM2 would lock into the audio transmitter. When I wanted to connect to my phone, I had to unplug the transmitter, before I can connect through my phone. It was too much of a hassle.
Steelseries Arctis 7:
When I took this out of the box, it felt premium. When I put it on my head, it was light and comfortable. The airweave material and cushions are soft against the ears and the ski goggles band doesn’t press onto the top of my head with pressure. The mic retracts inside the headphone with only a small nub sticking out. Some might think that ruins the look, but honestly, I didn’t mind it too much. The design of this headset is very minimalistic. I liked the fact it didn’t scream “GAMER ALERT!!!”
So how does it sound out of the box? Like crap. Steelseries advertised that the speaker drivers used in the Arctis 7 are the same drivers in their higher end headsets. When I listened to bass heavy tracks like The Weeknd’s Starboy, there was no thump. When I listened to Stephen’s Sincerely, at the point where the electric guitar came on… it was screechy. I tested out different kinds of music as well, Roy Hargrove’s Strasbourg / St. Denis and Chopin’s Nocturnes Op. 9 No. 2, they all were boring and flat. How is this possible? All the reviews I’ve read claimed this is the best overall gaming headset!
With doubt, I connected the Arctis 7 to my PS4 Pro. I played Monster Hunter: World for a few hours. Once again, I noticed how comfortable the headsets were. Now in a gaming environment, the headset sounded clear. The music and effects were crisp. Yet, I was still unhappy about it. The sound quality does not justify the price or the glowing reviews. After spending some more time listening to various game music, I put the headset back in the box, ready to ship it back out for a refund. But… I’ll get back to the Arctis 7 later.
Logitech G933 Artemis Spectrum:
When I took this out of the box, it looked different. Obviously, it looks ridiculously cool. It has RGB lighting to make sure you defiintely stand out if you were gaming in the public eye. But for someone who games at home. What use is the RGB lighting? Hmmm… Anyways, when I put the G933 on my head, I felt the weight. The earcups’ material was also rougher than the ones on the Arctis 7; It felt cheap. And to drive home how cheap the headsets were, the headband cushion adhesive was peeling off already. The G933 had a tighter clamping force, yet due to the weight, if you move your head at all, it will shift. After a while, these headsets do get uncomfortable.
So how does it sound out of the box? Wow. After testing the Arctis 7 and going to the G933, it is like a night and day difference. With the G933, there was the bass Arctis 7 was missing, the vocals and instruments sounded great. To be fair, I used the same music to test the Logitech and it amazed with everything I threw at it. Playing Monster Hunter with the G933 is also an entertaining experience. I felt even more immersed in the game. But then, why was I unhappy with it? It just wasn’t as comfortable as the Arctis 7 and the build quality was questionable at the price range.
I have a dilemna. Do I keep the Logitech G933, because it sounds great, but uncomfortable, short battery life (8 hours light, 12 hours no light) and already showing signs of falling apart? or do I keep the Steelseries Arctis 7, because it is comfortable, claims a battery life of 24 hours, but the sound didn’t knock anyone’s socks off? I pondered and slept on it.
I then looked through more Arctis 7 reviews and one caught my eye. The reviewer on Amazon also mentioned how the headset sounded really flat out the box on his PS4 and suggested people plug it into the PC and update the firmware and change the equalizer preset from FLAT to something else. One would have thought to plug it into the computer and tweak it, but the arrogant side of me told me, I shouldn’t have to mess with equalizer settings for headphones to sound good out of the box.
In the end, I installed the Steelseries Engine software and did the updates, played around with the different presets and in search for the optimal equalizer settings, I came across a Reddit post https://www.reddit.com/r/steelseries/comments/65ogu1/best_arctis_7_equalizer_settings/
In the post, the OP created a few presets with the program Equalizer APO and Peace. When I installed these programs and used his different presets, I settled on one and immediately made my decision to keep the Arctis 7 and return the G933. My Arctis 7 headset now sounds great (the settings are saved to the headset) so it won’t revert back to the flatness I was dealing with unless I want to.
If you’re like me and struggled with deciding between the two of these headsets. Try both out. Sound is such a personal thing. With the tweaked equalizer settings, the Arctis 7 became better headphones IMO. Without any tweaking the G933 sounded superb from the start. It was just the disappointing build quality, short battery life and discomfort from the earcups that ultimately turned me off from it.
Sidenote: The Logitech’s software beats Steelseries’s software hands down. Logitech had more customizations and sound profiles for specific games.
One more thing before I end this post. The Logitech G933 features Dolby and DTS:X 7.1 virtual surround sound for computers only, whereas, Steelseries Arctis 7 features only DTS:X, also for PC only. I’ve tested both and honestly, they don’t sound good at all. These manufacturers can market it all they want, the feature is useless. Don’t get hung up on the fact that G933 has Dolby and the Arctis 7 doesn’t. Chances are you end up not even using the virtual surround at all.
