Dave Matthews Band may be the world’s greatest rock ‘n’ roll hosts.

When Warren Haynes steps onstage, Matthews willingly cedes leadership of his group to the Gov’t Mule frontman and the band itself turns its signature sound over to Haynes as well.

Trading solos and playing in harmony with Tim Reynolds and swapping verses with Matthews on Neil Young’s “Cortez the Killer,” Haynes transforms DMB into his own NY tribute act, one more cutting and raw than the band ever sounds on its own.

For a quarter-hour on Aug. 31 at the Gorge, the Dave Matthews Band belonged to Haynes, who cued every solo, decided when the verses would begin and held the audience so firmly in his grasp they joined in with the nominal leader and the actual leader toward the end:

He came dancin’ across the water/Cortez, Cortez

It was a killer.
