sometimes medieval pilgrim songs are absolute bangers, actually
i just adore the midnight burger chapter 29: stella splendens. It just has this really slow chill vibe i like in media, and i love terrick of york and joseph and clementine and the city that is so full of history. I'd like to find some more stories with similar vibe
dawn of the star earth seen from the fields of venus (alvorada da estrela terra vista dos campos de vênus), Clara Moreira (2014)
Português: vênus cavalga o vale, com uma mão olha o espelho, com a outra mão segura o cabelo. desenha, como quem lambe (o teu corpo), como quem lembra, os olhos fixos na lembrança fóssil do destino. English: venus rides the valley, looking in the mirror with one hand, holding the hair with the other. draws a picture, like one who licks (your body), like one who remembers, eyes fixed on the fossil memory of destiny.

probably reading too much into this, but what I love about Stella splendens is the underlying class analysis :
the Ruling Classes have sinned. the focus is on their repentance, sure, but that is still fundamentally because they have sinned
the clergy, soldiers and the Merchant classes are similarly "recompensed". now you could read this in a few ways, but "recompense" is by definition predicated on something prior. so, if they've been rewarded with forgiveness and grace, it implies they've done things (i.e. sins) which can be forgiven and responded to with grace.
however when it comes to the peasants, farm labourers, scribes, people who help and advocate for others, craftspeople etc., they all come to Mont Serrat simply to rejoice !!! how wonderful that that is their primary motive ! Good folks by all accounts
in the same context women are mentioned. and not only noblewomen, but also young women and maidens, old women, widows and nuns. (perhaps a little condescending that the noblewomen are not judged alongside their male counterparts, but it was the 1300s so, y'know.. could've been worse)
it also ends with the explicit line that everyone, regardless of sex, is included. (note. I think the Latin technically says "everyone of either sex", implying two. but I'd like to think the author offered that line in a sincerely inclusive spirit, so I won't be too harsh on someone from the literal 14th century for not having woke language like)
Who is your favourite flute player? ;)
Is actually anyone else out there who listens to Stella Splendens when anxious or upset? Last year in November, after I first met Iorveth (yeah I know, I am a bit late), I bought a version of the Llibre Vermell de Monserrat, so that I can have the song on any device and take it with me all the time. Can really recommend this!
The discarded bits we get from BoLT convey the image of Earendil as a guy who enjoys sailing, but in the published Silm everything is so heavy... He wants to sail to find his parents and to ask the Valar for help, then he is “defeated by shadows and enchantments, driven by repelling winds, until longing for Elwing” and “a sudden fear” which comes from bad dreams tells him to get the fuck home and fast. The word “adventures” to describe his experiences alleviates it a little, and him dancing with mermaids is like 100% always canon in my heart, but it does give me the vibe that the Lay of Earendil is like, the Middle Earth Odyssey or smth.
I was thinking about this because when he asks Elwing to choose for them/choose first, he says he is weary of the world, and I was like, oh man, this little joyful fella who took so much joy in sailing and braving the world is now like, jaded or tired of it. But in the Silm you don’t even get that contrast :/
