From • @film_mewse R.I.P Norman Lloyd who died at the incredible age of 106 on May 11, at his home in Beverly Hills. His career as an actor, producer and director spanned nine decades, encompassing film, stage, radio and TV. He learned his craft under the watchful eye of actress/director Eva Le Gallienne, before joining the young renegade Orson Welles' progressive Mercury Theater. It was a collaboration which during the 50s McCarthy witch hunts, would ultimately mark his demise, since he was blacklisted by every film studio by association. His later career behind the scenes as a producer on Alfred Hitchcock Presents saved him fading away from the industry altogether. • He began his career in vaudeville before making his Broadway debut with Sylvia Sidney in "Crime" (1927), which ran for more than 180 performances. • “The early 30s was actually a good time to be an actor,” he said in 2015. “I saw an advertisement to join a young theatre group; as it turns out it had an unknown called Orson Welles at the helm. He was just 21.” • Norman’s first role with the Mercury Theatre company was as Cinna in "Julius Caesar". “Welles had the play transplanted to Fascist Italy. It was an unexpected triumph.” • In 1940, Lloyd followed Orson to Hollywood to make "Heart of Darkness", but the project fell through. Married with a family to support, his agent introduced him to Alfred Hitchcock, who cast him as Fry in "Saboteur" (1942). In 1945, he’d would work for the director again in "Spellbound" (1945). His other films include: "The Unseen" (1945), "A Walk in the Sun" (1945), "A Letter for Evie" (1946) "Young Widow" (1948), "M" (1951), and "Limelight" (1952). • Between 1982-88, he played Dr. Daniel Auschlander on "St. Elsewhere". Other projects then followed: "Dead Poets Society" (1989), "The Age of Innocence" (1993), "In Her Shoes" (2005), and "Trainwreck" (2014). In 2016, he lost out on a role in the Coen Brothers comedy "Hail, Caesar!" (2016) since they were hesitant of casting a centenarian in the submarine scene on open water. His wife died in 2011. • • #iusedtobeinpictures #normanlloyd #actor #hollywood #mercurytheatre #orsonwelles #alfredhitchcock #1950s #stelsewhere https://www.instagram.com/p/COxDel-p79rLSXEAVwWptiD9iRZ4p4ATdzQzJg0/?igshid=1nxo9s2it1e9q
