@sterekvalentineweek - Day 7 Tuxedo
“You would not believe the day I— why are you wearing a Tuxedo?” Stiles comes to a sudden stop, staring at Derek, who is staring at him like a deer caught in headlights. He’s carrying two wine glasses and a bottle of white wine. There’s also an indefinite amount of napkins between his teeth.
Derek almost drops everything. “Stiles,” he says around the napkins, “you’re early.”

When Stiles looks up from his studies to see a tiny child with big green eyes and a spill of ink-black hair holding out a half consumed lollipop to him, he says:
“Uhh… Hi.”
The kid just blinks at him.
He could have come from anywhere - Stiles is sitting outside Mama Ruth’s Diner today and the wrought iron fence encasing the seating area has openings on all sides.
(Stiles usually sits inside, but the day was too beautiful to not bask in it. Meandering clouds crossing the sapphire blue sky, a lazy breeze rustling over his knuckles and ears, the scent of flowers awakening from their winter slumbers.)
Stiles extends his neck to scope this way and that down the sidewalk on either side of the diner, but there is no sign of a hysterical parent looking for their lost child.
He turns back to the little kid.
His tiny, bushy eyebrows crease in consternation, and then he’s offering Stiles the lollipop again. He shoves it forcefully at him in the air, making melodic, prompting noises high in his throat.
Which is when Stiles realizes that this kid is actually more like a baby, if his lack of vocabulary is anything to go on, and there’s gotta be a joke hidden somewhere in this situation about not taking candy from a baby.
But in the moment all Stiles can manage is concern, and the sudden relief that the little guy had come up to Stiles instead of chasing a kitty down an alleyway or into a street or -
Stiles lays down his pen and turns fully towards the toddler to bend over and get on his level. He accepts the sticky lollipop with exaggerated excitement.
“Wow! Thank you so much for sharing your candy with me! Is it alright if I pick you up? I’d like to help you find your mo-”
“Micah!” A voice booms from behind them.
Stiles and the little boy turn and he almost double takes when he sees the man the voice belongs to.
Somewhere, an Adonis Model Factory is missing one of their specimen, and he’s here sprinting past storefronts and dodging streetlights and trashcans to get to them.

Derek hated shopping, it was always busy, too many people, it was overwhelming and he just wanted to go back home but this was a pack day. Which meant he had to spend the day with teenagers because he thought it was great to be an alpha to teenagers.
Laura would be laughing at him if she were here.
And Derek would only growl at her and before his thoughts could really drag him into a dark place, Stiles had more or less slammed into him.
“Derek!” Stiles exclaimed as Derek only wrapped his arms around him to make sure the idiot didn’t fall over, wincing as Stiles yelled in his ear.
“What?”
Stiles didn’t even look apologetic as he only grinned up at him and Derek only narrowed his eyes. Stiles knew that he had Derek wrapped around his finger but the man couldn’t help it. Stiles meant more to him then the human knew and he could never find the words to tell Stiles. So, he tried to always show it in action, he had no idea if the message was received, but he always loved seeing Stiles’ reactions to things he would do for him.
“I know you hate this right now, but, at least go to three stores with me and I will sneak you out,” Stiles whispered to him.
Derek only rolled his eyes because the pack was only a few feet aware with enhanced hearing which meant they could hear everything they said to each other. But he felt his chest loosen at the thought of the early possibility of getting away so he only nodded as Stiles kissed his cheek and dragged him.
“These stores have to be perfect,” Stiles only mumbled as he stopped at the mall map and Derek glowered at the giggling females who were staring right at him.
He wasn’t sure how to react when Stiles simply moved so he was in front of Derek, blocking him from their looks as he pointed at the map, “Let’s go to this one. I think you will like it.”
“This is meant for what you want,” Derek only said and Stiles scoffed.
“Where’s the fun in that? I don’t want to bore you.”
Derek sighed as he let Stiles have his way. He wasn’t stupid, he knew why Stiles stepped in front of him and it only made him relax even more, more willing to let Stiles take care of him as he lived life once more.
“Come on, this way,” Stiles started as he pulled Derek away from the girls who were still staring at him. Derek wasn’t sure what to say as Stiles turned to glare at them before they turned the corner.
“Wish people had the decency to leave you alone, like yes you are attractive, I mean I have eyes Derek but they were straight out gawking at you-”
“Thanks,” Derek interrupted him softly, intertwining their hands together and made sure to give him a smile. It was worth it to see the way Stiles blush as he cleared his throat and nodded, “Cool, cool, alright.”
He ignored the awes he knew they were getting from the pack as he was dragged into a store that was full of little gemstones and hand crafted things. It was beautiful he thought to himself as he stared at a dragon that was sculpted out of jade, it was a tiny thing but elegant. He knew Stiles was somewhere but he took his time looking at everything, to the funny little signs and socks, to little wired trees with crystals as leaves.
“Did you find anything you like?” Stiles asked, popping out of nowhere and Derek only shook his head.
“I like this, it’s a good store.”
“I know right? No clothes or pop music, just a store that is filled with random nice things. I like coming in here every time.”
Derek ended up walking away with a little gem base that had a metal wolf howling, he saw it and immediately thought of Cora. He thinks she would have liked it.
Derek wasn’t sure where else he was dragged too, just content to be near his mate, looking around at the random places Stiles took him too. He noticed the little things Stiles would do for him without thinking about it, making sure the store wasn’t too full, and dragged him to areas where it was quiet, taking the attention if too many people stared at him.
He appreciated everything Stiles did for him and he knew he was smitten. It didn’t really matter to him that Stiles was already his, that he didn’t have to pine anymore for the human. He was always going to want him, to crave him and he was okay with that.
Stiles did little things for him and Derek loved him even more for it. The affection he had only grew every day and he could see spending the rest of his life with Stiles, the wolf in him agreeing, chanting mate in his mind over and over.
“Hey Stiles?”
“Yes?” Stiles asked as he placed the book down and he was looking at to immediately come to his side.
“Valentine's day is soon, let’s go out or do something.”
“Wait,” Stiles said as he leaned back and stared at him with wide eyes, “But I thought you didn’t want to do anything?”
He had remembered the disappointment he smelled and saw as Stiles had only nodded and let it go when Derek had declared it. He had always hated the holiday, found it useless and a little ridiculous and he thought Stiles did too. But, he was Stiles first real relationship, he was Stiles first to many firsts. And if Stiles wanted to do valentines with him, then Derek would do it.
“For you? Anything.”
Stiles was shocked, he could see it as Stiles nodded slowly before he hugged him, “Okay, let’s discuss it after? In private, where it is quiet?”
Derek nodded, grateful that Stiles could tell he struggled with people as Stiles only beamed at him.
“I thought you didn’t do romance sourwolf.”
“I do, just when we are alone. I-” Derek hesitated before he only shook his head and kissed Stiles on the forehead. No, he won't say it in a damn mall. Later, maybe later he will finally say those damn words and Stiles touched his hand gently as he nodded in understanding.
Stiles understood him in ways others could never. And for that, Stiles was everything.

Stiles' fingers tap a casual rhythm against the hardwood coffee table that Peter insisted on wanting for the living room, and Derek is helpless but to listen to it, the slow beat a contrast to Stiles' own thunderous heartbeat. Stiles' heart has always been a little too fast, a little too loud, but when he's deep in the haze of researching the latest Big Bad? His heart beats even more faster, all the caffeine in his veins showing themselves as a heart pumping too fast, a body barely still.
Derek glances at the clock hung on the wall behind the couch, sighs, and leaves his post leaning against the arch to the living room to walk towards his human packmate.
"Stiles."
