Stereogum Interview wif Noel Gallagher

Noel is the best. His new album Chasing Yesterday comes out soon. Tuesday March the third, to be exact.

STEREOGUM: How’s it going, man?

GALLAGHER: Hey, man, it’s OK, man. How are you?

STEREOGUM: Not too bad. Are you doing a bunch of interviews today?

GALLAGHER: You know, I just did quite a long interview for some fucking thing called Spotify.

STEREOGUM: I was actually going to ask you about Spotify. Why were you doing an interview with them?

GALLAGHER: I don’t know. Fuck knows. Lord knows they’re not paying me enough fucking money to do it.

STEREOGUM: Do you have many opinions on the whole Spotify thing?

GALLAGHER: I don’t Spotify. I don’t agree with streaming. I prefer to buy my music rather than rent it. I think it’s a generational thing. The generation I was brought up in, music wasn’t for rent. It was for sale.

More On The "Emo Revival"

Three days ago I posted about a Stereogum list that claimed the emo revival is here. In the link above, Dan Ozzi (aka The Jaded Punk...love it) bashes recent articles from Stereogum, Pitchfork, and The Village Voice that have attempt to call to arms the attention of the masses to the arrival of an emo revival. Ozzi wrote this article well, with enough sarcasm and wit to get his point across: the music industry does not care about "emo" because emo does not make money.

But what really irked me was the comments section. Users were fiercely, and arrogantly, bickering over what defines emo. And through all the wreckage, a man named Roy Jones stepped up with a golden nugget:

"Don't you see how shitty and hypocritical it is to say that your definition of emo is credible and someone else's is lame? Are emo fans still so desperate for approval that they have to have it at the expense of music someone else loves? If you think that being a neckbeard in his late 20s listening to embarrassingly earnest songs about heartbreak is 'cooler' than being a teen My Chemical Romance fan, then A. you're dead wrong, and B. you're no different to the music press who were so dismissive about YOUR emo the first fucking time around."

Roy is so right. I'm am even guilty of this....my hate for My Chemical Romance bleeds into my definition of what is not emo. Countless internet forums are devoted to cut-throat debate over what emo is, and more particularly what it isn't. Now, my opinion is this: who cares? Support the music. Support the artists. Music is subjective. Some guy named Ian Cohen at Pitchfork doesn't wave a wand and declare, "Emo is back!" Evan Weiss (the man behind previously solo act, now full band Into It. Over It.) is finally receiving recognition after 14 YEARS of putting out some of the most honest, beautiful tunes. The emo genre, or even ideology, has been chugging along slowly without the big wig's of the music industry for some time. Everyone needs to chill out, stop trying to define it, and enjoy the music before its gone.
