Paul Newman was band from Austin, comprised of members (current and future) of American Analog Set, Drums & Tuba, and I Love You But I’ve Chosen Darkness.

Comprised of two bass guitars, one bass vi, and a guitar, they’re often compared to Dianogah. You can still find records via My Pal God and Comedy Minus One labels, and there’s a decent amount on YouTube and other streaming services. But oddly, this band fell through the cracks and is often forgotten.

The internet has virtually forgotten Houston. You can buy this CD at various web outlets, but bio info is borderline unavailable. They were from Minneapolis and played a lot with bands like Hum, Shiner, Failure, etc. This was their third, and last, record; arguably their best, too. If you like huge-guitar, huge-drum, huge-bass riff shit (like the other bands mentioned), you’ll be way pumped on Houston.

Shipyards is a rad band from Japan who, in my opinion, do the “Superchunk-sound” better than most English bands who try. Buy/stream their record “About Lights” here.

Someday I were a post-punk band from Colorado and put out two albums on Owned & Operated Records (owned/ran by members of Descendants/ALL). “Look Up And Live” was their first LP and had a great layout by the always great Andy Mueller/Ohio Girl. John Meredith, who sang and played bass, often ran live sound for Shiner and, after they broke up, became the first bass player for The Life and Times.

I’ve been geeking over this band for a few weeks, ever since a member posted a song on VLV. Now Magic Bullet, who’s releasing the record, has posted the entire thing to stream! NY in 64 is prog rock/metal/hardcore at it’s best. And it’s not hard to understand why:

After taking a fifteen-year hiatus from writing music together, Justin Hock and Thomas Schlatter — both part of the writing team behind ‘90s screamo band, You And I — began laying down the framework to collaborate once again. To flesh out the outfit, Schlatter and Hock recruited New Jersey musical veterans Chris Alfano and Seth Rheam, best known for their work in the progressive powerhouse East of the Wall, among many other acts, completing the lineup for NY IN 64. Completely void of vocals, the raw energy of 90’s hardcore supplied by Hock and Schlatter, mixed with the refined technical aspects of progressive metal Alfano and Rheam deliver, were like two worlds colliding, however, resulted into something that seamlessly blended the two contrary styles. While injecting the energy and enthusiasm of a basement show into a more refined musical composition, NY IN 64 attempts to harness two sides of many coins; youth and age, rawness and precision, joy and hostility.
