Lecture 14: The legendary Frank Zappa appeared on The Steve Allen Show on March 3, 1963. Revered by beatniks, cultural rebels and nonconformists, Steve Allen often welcomed eccentrics on his program. Zappa’s appearance on the show gave the young musician’s penchant for experimentation an enormous boost in visibility. Zappa played a bicycle on this episode, to demonstrate the various sounds that could be gotten out of it. Allen’s reactions to his quirky guest are priceless. Even by Allen’s high tolerance for weirdness, Zappa was way out there.
