a few months late but huh it's rlly interesting to me that you said the characterisation's a bit thin/easy to miss in Forge of Darkness bc that was one of my complaints of Gardens of the Moon that I found was massively improved in Deadhouse Gates and Memories of Ice (DG was written what a decade after GotM? bc GotM was just that hard a sell to publishers pfft). I wonder if it's because Erikson wanted to capture a sort of mythic/folktale register or something. time to read FoD after uhhh *checks notes* finishing the entirety of MbotF and reading The God is Not Willing! least by that time Walk in Shadow would probably be out riiiight?

I don't want to undersell GotM lol it's an incredibly fun book absolutely no regrets reading it it's just that DG (barring one kinda major structural flaw) is just goddamn incredible lol

So from what I remember it's not so much that the characterization is bad so much as that it's thinly spread? Like, even with 900 pages when you've got three heroes journeys, two and a half court intrigue plots, and a half dozen side plots with their own protagonists, the available page count to dedicate to any given character gets pretty thin.

And then separately a solid half of the leads are very much written in a mythic/epic register, with the sort of emotions you'd expect from that, yeah.

(I'm sure the main ten books are good, but also I'm pretty sure I could five times as many other books in te time it would take me to get through the series. So, you know, some day!)

Okay 400 pages into Forge of Darkness and finally have the full scope of the plot, I think.

I think I have an oddly good memory for books like this, in that I only remember the vaguest shape of what people's name are and could spell 0* of them but I'm usually able to remember/figure out who someone is and their place in the narrative after a few paragraphs of their POV?

*Okay, 1. 'T'riss' is cheating though. And I'm not sure I put the apostrophe in the right place.

Well I enjoyed it anyway and I'm having fun reading it. Reminds me of why I'm writing a book too
