Today on Stuff You Might Have Missed
From episode 84, “Steven Floats”:
A workplace safety lawsuit had been preventing the Big Donut from making donuts onsite? You don’t say!!
Not that that’s a huge surprise for anyone who remembers the discussion in episode 21, “Joking Victim”:
So not only does this close that chapter; it explains why “the accident” was never cleaned up. It’s evidence!
(Er, not that it’s typical to leave evidence like that in an operational business for months because of an open lawsuit. But still.)
We’re not sure why the lawsuit got thrown out--presumably because the Big Donut was not at fault--could “The Accident” have been Gem-related and judged NOT an issue of “workplace safety”? (At least, not one that the Big Donut has any control over?) In any case now I’d really like to see how the back room has transformed if they’re baking donuts onsite now!
. . .
now you gotta just get a little happy. Not TOO happy mind you.
Being an emotional teenager whose powers are tied to your emotions has GOT to suck.
Super Watermelon Island- Steven Floats
Hey guys, haven't had a whole lot of time to watch during the holidays, but here's what I made it through so far and highlights on my thoughts/feelings about each episode.
Super Watermelon Island:
First off, this beautiful little community and life these lil watermelon dudes have made for themselves makes me so happy. You go, melons! And would you look at that melon dog?? SO CUTE
Honestly the best part of this episode was the wicked fight scene between Alexandrite and Malachite. I feel like we haven't had a real good fight scene in a long time (unless you count the robo battle in Back to the Barn). Overall, this episode was action packed, but not a whole lot else. Not bad though, just not great. 8/10
Gem Drill:
Okay, this one got to me. The moment Steven wakes up the tension starts building in this episode. Setting the scene at Peri & Steven crammed together in a tiny drill deep under the earth was a great way to build to the climax. And can we talk about how amazingly done Steven's panic attack was?
Seriously, I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. It was really great to see Steven use his astral projection powers to help the cluster shards come together and bubble each other, too. My spouse said that it felt like a cop-out to them, but I loved it. There's still a partial consciousness in those shards somewhere, and if anyone can find it, it's Steven. My only final thought is that I don't believe it will last forever. But that's a problem for later Steven, I guess. 9/10
Same Old World:
The interactions between Steven & Lapis were cute in this episode, but what I was really interested in was Lapis's backstory. We learned a little bit about the war, but with that came so many more questions (as things usually go in this show). Why was it decided the war would not be won? Why did all of the Homeworld gems leave in a panic? And what the heck was this?
7/10
Barn Mates:
This episode gave me a little bit of mixed feelings. I felt for Peridot, but I had to try and put myself in Lapis's shoes (bare feet) too. It was a little tough to unpack. I think the whole problem was this: in all of Peridot's endeavors to get Lapis to like her, she wasn't really thinking about what she would really want. With the card, she did not write an apology or show any signs of true understanding that what she did hurt Lapis. With the pool, she didn't think about how Lapis endured a lot trauma in the water. And with the tape recorder, she didn't consider that when she was stuck in the mirror, Lapis essentially WAS a tape recorder. The hard thing is, I'm not sure WHAT Lapis would actually want. The answer might be that things like this are a lot more complex than that and it might just take time. 7/10
Hit the Diamond:
This episode was hands-down one of my favorites by far. The Ruby Squad was a delight, every character got great moments, and I was genuinely laughing throughout the entire thing. There's not much more I can say about it without taking time to point out every sing joke I thought was funny, which I'm sure no one wants to read (like, just go watch the episode instead). I will leave one of my favorite parts here though:
8.5/10
Steven Floats:
This episode was... Pretty meh, to be honest. Maybe because it's following Hit the Diamond, but honestly I was little underwhelmed. It was cool to see Steven figure out a new power, but don't you think his boredom and frustration with falling too slowly would put him in a bad enough mood to... Make him fall faster? Also, I'm not sure what it is about this particular episode, but his baby-voice seemed to be turned up to the max and irritated the hell out of me. The best parts of this episode where that Garnet steals Kofi's phone, and we got this quick moment:
6/10
You guys liking this format? Would you prefer each episode gets it's own post so it's not one huge one? Got any burning questions? Lemme know!
