Thoughts on Pirate King by Ateez

Heads up this is mostly going to be about the music not the lyrics because I have a general idea of the meaning of the lyrics but translation is hard.

I hear chimes over the building beat and I like

The growl at the start? Rude

BEAM ME THE FUCK UP

That weird high synth that’s in some sort of minor key is wild and adds a creepy vibe. Not sure but it sounds kind of middle eastern? LIke the note progression? COmbining it with the chimes is so cool.

 It contrasts really well with Minki’s low rapping

I love how that synth descends and we get that hollow percussion in the background 

THE CHIMES coming in in the vocal pre-chorus

San fucking me up as usual

The build-up WITHOUT A DROP because everything is stopped and that supper creepy but effective “WilL yOU be My frIENd??”

PUlling everything out except the mm oeo + percussion - nice use of space

The MM OEO with the hollow descending percussion is awesome

BRASS SYNTH BRASS SYNTH WHAT YES PLEASE

Hongjoong’s higher rap with soft background music  and minimal bass was such a great contrast and it suddenly felt like we were floating or gliding 

Then the heavy bass + percussion + Minki’s low rapping was so intense

Another high-pitched almost shrieking synth to return us to the pre-chorus - it was like a bird cry

CHIMES COMING BACK IN YES

BACK TO THE OG WACKY SYNTH 

The vocals over the MM OEO and brass synth were really cool becuaase the vocals were punchy and staccato when the music beneath it wasn’t.  The brass synth is kind of staccato but it feels heavy and adds depth.

The bridge don’t get me started - San’s vocals? amazing. THe high-pitched chimes/xylophone sounds? amazing. YEOSANG’S DEEP SOULFUL VOICE????? AMAZING

The build-up and the brass synth part played at a higher pitch was so cool - i love partially delayed drops

Ending on brass synth tonic? REliably awesome

They somehow made a wild bass-heavy dance sound like a movie soundtrack and I vibe with that. Like my soul resonates with that shit.

Haitian(?) necromancers taught (traditional / Satanist / etc) witches black magic.

Haitian(?) woman- Marie Laveau = Total BAMF (not sure about her modern look, love the hair but the leopard print dress needs to go.)

Blond Hippie Chick- Misty Day- bring dead back to life.

Minotaur's back (Do I even wanna know how that relationship works?)
