Gender-Based Violence in South Africa has officially been classified as a 𝙉𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙎𝙩𝙖𝙩𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝘿𝙞𝙨𝙖𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙧
The Head of the National Disaster Management Centre (NDMC), Dr Bongani Elias Sithole, has classified GBVF as a national disaster. On November 21, 2025, thousands have protested across South Africa as part of a national shutdown to highlight the nation’s rampant GBVF. A demonstration has been organised to call on the government to declare GBV a national disaster by NGO Women for Change.

Gender-based violence and femicide are deeply entrenched and widespread crises in South Africa. Every day, women and children in both urban and rural communities face unimaginable violence and brutality. The government’s failure to take decisive action enables perpetrators to operate with impunity, leaving survivors without justice and communities in fear.
The following facts highlight the devastating reality of GBVF in South Africa. (All information can be found here) women for change
💜 The rate of femicide in South Africa is 6x higher than the global average, with at least 15 women being murdered every day.
💜 5,578 women were murdered in 2023/24, a 33,8% increase compared to the year before.
💜 1,656 children were murdered in 2023/24, a 38,7% increase compared to the year before
💜 42,569 rape cases were reported to the police in 2023/24.
💜 It’s estimated that 95% of rape cases are not reported.
💜 63,054 assaults with intent to inflict grievous bodily harm on women in 2023/24.
=> These alarming statistics make it clear that gender-based violence and femicide have reached a crisis point and that urgent action is needed to protect our women and children.

Scenes from Johannesburg for the National Women’s Shutdown.
Women standing together. Voices raised. Streets filled with anger, courage, and hope. This is what solidarity looks like - a reminder that we are done begging, done explaining, done surviving in silence.
To every woman who showed up in the heat, in the rain, in her pain - you are the revolution!

How unfortunate
The president of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, has finally declared GBV and femicide a national crisis, but that is all words no action. Unfortunately, it took this long for it to be acknowledged as a crisis. So many lives were taken and the government did nothing about it.
It's heartwrenching that women are only safe when dead in a casket.
Today is the Shutdown. Cannot wait to stand along (or in this case lie down) with women. Our voice cannot be silenced any more.
3 days until the Women's Shutdown
