From @natgeo video @paulnicklen Video by @PaulNicklen / / For some of us, the idea of killing large apex predators like a grizzly bear for the sake of bragging is incomprehensible, but there are others who argue that trophy hunting can be a tool for conservation. Some claim that the livelihood of remote communities depends on trophy hunting to pay the rent. For me, it’s a moral issue. We do not have the right to kill or take the life of another species just to make a buck or hang on our wall. The recent half-hearted grizzly hunting moratorium in my home province of British Columbia is not enough. We need to end hunting of all grizzly bears, period. I expect much opposition to this opinion, and that is a good thing. Let’s keep the conversation going. Follow me at @PaulNicklen to see this bear finally catch a fish, and to learn how we are #TurningTheTide at @Sea_Legacy. #StopTheTrophyHunt
I can't resist #repost this from @paulnicklen Continuing my thread from the @natgeo post of this same bear, I want to chat about grizzly bear hunting. The recent half-hearted grizzly hunting moratorium by the @BCNDP in my home province of British Columbia is not enough. We need to end hunting of all grizzly bears, period. This move is a glaring attempt to stay true to their campaign promise, while still allowing trophy hunters to kill apex predators in B.C.‘s territory. The government claims there are approximately 15,000 grizzlies in B.C. and hunters kill about 250 every year. Natural Resources Minister Doug Donaldson has stated, “Hunters will no longer be able to possess the hide or the head or the paws of the bear, so we feel quite confident that this announcement will mean the end of the grizzly bear trophy hunt through the province.” At SeaLegacy we know these immense, solitary creatures are more fragile than most people believe, requiring 4,000 square kilometres each as territory. They are an umbrella species whose health can help determine the health of an entire ecosystem. To hunt them in any fashion is anything but noble, and we want to add our voice to the loud chorus of British Columbians and citizens of the world who understand their value beyond a hide on a wall or a meal on a plate. Hit the link in our bio to read more and learn how you can help us #StopTheTrophyHunt while #TurningtheTide for grizzly bears.

Six weeks ago I was in #BritishColumbia #Canada and saw these two grizzly bears, which was amazing 🐻💕 . _ I felt joy and wonder seeing them. They were so beautiful, majestic and innocent. There's a reason we all had teddy bears as children. Bears are very misunderstood beings. Probably the most misunderstood animal on Earth. _ They're portrayed as 'dangerous beasts' but they actually kill on average zero persons a year. They actually eat a diet that's 90% plant-based. If they see or hear a human approaching, they actually go the other way to avoid us. We just need to respect their space and they'll respect ours. _ However, if a bear hunter saw these bears, they'd think 'how beautiful, I'm going to shoot them, pose with their corpse, get them mounted in my house or turned into a rug and call it conservation'. I'll never understand that mindset. How can anyone see a living, breathing, sentient being and think 'I want to KILL that animal and make them take their last ever breath and make their heart stop beating?' . _ Why don't people who kill animals ever think about how they would feel if the roles were reversed? All life is precious. Animal life is not expendable. Just like us, they are thinking, feeling beings with the desire to live and the capacity to suffer #LeaveAnimalsAlone #SaveBears #StopTheTrophyHunt #GetANormalHobby _ Caption/Video @a_lallie_new #repost
#Repost @pacificwild (@get_repost) ・・・ This is an excerpt from a CBC podcast today with Suzanne Veit of the Grizzly Bear Foundation on a report stating that the long term survival of grizzly bears in British Columbia is extremely threatened and in need of immediate change. Affected by the loss of habitat and food sources, as well as the government-sanctioned trophy hunt, the survival of B.C. #grizzlybears has been at the fore-front of @pacificwild's campaigns for years. Even with widespread support, we have seen little change. We hope this report from their Board of Inquiry will bring light to the immediate necessity for change that is within our control, despite the constant battle with hunters and politicians in support of #trophyhunting. “There is nothing wrong with hunting wildlife for food on a sustainable basis and, indeed, hunters have played an important role in conservation activities to maintain this opportunity, but it seems that the great majority of British Columbians will no longer countenance hunters shooting grizzly bears just to mount their heads or pelts on a trophy wall. As a society, I believe that we have grown beyond that”, commented Inquiry member Stuart McLaughlin. My first grizzly experience! 10 feet outside my car on the Cranberry Connector in Northern BC. What beautiful beasts.
