What are Stopwords in python?

 Stopwords are the most common words in any natural language. To assay manual data and make NLP models, these Stopwords might not add major value to the meaning of the document.

Generally, the most common words used in a handbook are “ the ”, “ is ”, “ in ”, “ for ”, “ where ”, “ when ”, “ to ”, “ at ”etc.

Consider this handbook string – “ There's a pen on the table ”. The words “ is ”, “ a ”, “ on ”, and “ the ” add no meaning to the statement while parsing it. Whereas words like “ there ”, “ book ”, and “ table ” are the keywords and tell us what the statement is all about.

 Stop words are ever barred from the substance before preparing deep erudition and machine erudition models since stop words come in bounty, so giving constitutionally no phenomenal information that can be used for depiction or gathering. A couple of instruments expressly avoid barring these stop words to help the state hunt. We've to bar Stopwords while performing assignments, comparable to, Spam Filtering, Auto-Tag Generation, Language Family, and so forth.

Another advantage of removing stop words is that it reduces the size of the dataset and the time taken in training the model.

 How to Remove Stopwords ?

 NLTK, or the Natural Language Toolkit, is a treasure trove of a library for manual pre-processing. It’s one of the Python libraries. Natural Language Toolkit, most commonly used to remove Stopwords.

前言

停用詞 (Stop Words) 的定義上是兩個集合：

這個語言中出現非常頻繁的詞。

文本資料中出現非常頻繁的詞。

以英文為例，非常頻繁出現的詞常是 "a", "the", "is", "are", "in", "on" 這些功能詞，這符合第 1 條定義。而如果我們拿美國總統川普的推特發文來計算詞彙的出現頻率的話，可能會發現 "very"、"best" 和 "perfect" 也是頻率非常高的詞彙，這符合第 2 條定義。

我們可以想像，如果手邊有兩類文件，其中一類會提到 "score"、"win" 這些字眼，另一類會提到 "temperature"、"wind"、"cloud" 這些字眼。那麼我們大概可以猜得到，這兩類大概有一類和體育運動有關，另一類則是和天氣或是氣象有關。

除了前述的 "score"、"win"、"temperature"…的詞彙外，這些文件中也含了許多的停用詞。如果此時出現了一篇新的文件，而我們希望可以拿這份文件裡的詞彙來比對一下，看看它究竟是比較像體育運動的那一類，還是比較像天氣或氣象有類的那一類時，我們就必需要先做「移除停用詞 (remove stop words)」的操作。

否則，就只會得到「新文章中出現 58 次 "is"，30 次 "a"」這種很難有結論的比較結果。

在 NLP 的領域裡「去除停用詞 (remove stop words)」的操作，以 NLTK 對英文示範如下：

如此就能出現：

這三個詞彙。而且很明顯地，這三個詞彙就是 "There is an apple on the table." 一句中的語意重點。

前面講的都是以「英文」為例，那麼中文該怎麼辦呢？我去哪裡找出「這個語言中出現非常頻繁的詞」的清單呢？

網路上的確有些「中文停用詞清單」的整理存在。例如：

中文常用停用词表 (簡中)

停用詞-繁體中文.txt (繁中)

但若考慮到前述的「停用詞定義」，就會發現直接取用這些停用詞表對你的 NLP 操作結果的良率，不一定有正面的幫助，甚至可能會有負面影響的。

原因有二：

這些詞彙並不一定是「中文這個語言中出現頻繁的詞」，您可以稍微瀏覽一下前列的兩個連結內容。

這些詞彙頂多只是清單提供者手邊的文本中「文本資料出現頻繁的詞」，但那不一定就是「你」手邊文本中出現頻繁的詞呀！

就語言學的角度來看，任何語言都是由「內容詞 (content words)」去依附在「功能詞 (function words)」的結構上來形成一個句子的。換言之，功能詞會提供一個通用的骨架，讓內容詞填上血肉。

用比喻說明：功能詞就像是通用的一個提包構型，但只要在這個提包上加裝不同的小飾品或配件，你就能帶著提包，去不同的場合扮演不同的角色。像是加個蝴蝶結飾品，就能帶去宴會場合；加裝迷彩尼龍扣帶，就能帶去社交野餐的場合；把提帶改成背帶，就能從提包變成背包…等等。

如此一來，當你「只看這個包包，就要決定它適合出現的場合」時，需要依賴的參考資訊並不是那個基本構型的「提包」，而是依附上去的配件。

提包 + 蝴蝶結 => 宴會

提包 + 迷彩尼龍扣環 => 社交野餐

提包 - 提帶 + 背包 => 背包

依這個結構來看，我們完全可以不考慮提包，而把它刪掉，一樣可以得到它的角色和場合：

+ 蝴蝶結 => 宴會

+ 迷彩尼龍扣環 => 社交野餐

- 提帶 + 背包 => 背包

這種「刪掉不具參考價值的提包骨架」的操作，在 NLP 裡就叫做「去除停用詞 (remove stop words)」。

綜合以上，我們已經知道兩件事：

語言裡的停用詞，不該整理一個清單來處理。

NLP 的領域裡定義的停用詞，和語言學定義裡的「功能詞」有異曲同工之妙。

但大部份的人都不是語言學家呀！我怎麼知道哪些是功能詞，要去除呢？

ArticutAPI 裡已經提供了方便的函式 .getContentWordLIST()

如此一來，就能得到去除了「上面」(方位功能詞) 和「一顆」(量詞功能詞) 這些停用詞以後的結果：

餐桌 有 蘋果

我們也能很直覺地發現，這三個詞彙的確就是原句「餐桌上面有一顆蘋果」的語意重點了。

這是因為 Articut 中文斷詞引擎在在斷詞的同時就標好了詞性標記 (POS)，因此在呼叫 .getContentWordLIST() 的時候，它就把中文這個語言中扮演「功能詞」角色的詞彙都略過，直接回覆你文章中具有參考價值的「內容詞 (Content words)」是哪些。

這麼一來，ArticutAPI 的 .getContentWordLIST() 是不是讓你有了一些如何做文本語意分析的靈感了呢？
