One big tip you should know is which fruits and vegetables do not store very well in the fridge. With budget cooking we want to extend the life of our food for as long as they will allow us. So, just remember these items do not store well in the fridge and should be stored in a cool dry area, like a cupboard:
These items should be kept at room temperature in a ventilated area, so anywhere that isn't your cupboard or fridge! If you don't have much space in your kitchen, why not try buying a cheap small basket, and hang it from your ceiling to free up some space:
The bottom of your fridge should be where all your meats are kept, in case of any blood or juices that could drip down.
Nearly all fruits and vegetables can be stored in the freezer for upto 8 months if you know you will not use them all up. This is ideal if you are only cooking for one. However these fruit and veg do not store well because of their high water content:
Herbs can be frozen, although they will appear soggy when defrosted they still keep all their flavour and nutrients.
Store bread in its packaging and make sure it is sealed, any air will make it go stale. You can freeze bread for upto 3 months.
If you are freezing homecooked meals, wait for them to cool down first, then put in a container and label it, so you know what it is, and when it was made.
As a general rule, fruit and veg will stay freezer fine for 8 months, fish and shellfish for 6 months and meat and poultry (chicken) for 3 months.
