When you get your fresh broccoli head home, be sure to chop off the bottom and place in a jug of water. You can then place the entire thing in the fridge, or in a cool place until ready to use. This will prolong the life of new broccoli as well as reviving that forgotten limp broccoli you found in the back of the fridge! You can also revive old or limp greens by placing in a bowl of icy water before using in the recipe. My leggy sunflowers have been repotted! I'll grow them on for a week or so and then begin to acclimatise them outside in my cold frame. 🌻

Ok so here goes for today's allotment update: Starting top left, the girls helping me set up our 6th no-dig bed. I will make a blog post about how I do these... although no bed is ever made exactly the same way as we use what we can scavenge! Then it's the girls' own garden bed where they have happily planted some strawberry plants (runners that were kindly donated by our allotment neighbour!) and then I started the structure for their broad beans and sweet peas to climb up. Next is the cold frame I hand built today using salvaged bricks and vintage windows from a local reclamation yard (these materials cost me less than £10!) Next is the new and improved campfire zone complete with straw bales sofas! The last two pictures show the allotment at different angles as the sun was setting today. Phew! There's nothing the human spirit needs more than a connection to nature, to the earth and all its rugged beauty. This is especially true for the littlest of folk. Nurture their being by allowing them time to explore and find joy in the wilderness. Let them chill out in a wheelbarrow now and again or take a chicken for a ride! Build awesome dens and plant delicious strawberries. Or just be. Be present in nature and let it envelope you, because nothing is more important for the spirit than the essence of the Earth. ❤️
