Happy National Strawberry - Rhubarb Pie Day! Rhubarb is usually considered a vegetable. In the US, however, a New York court decided in 1947 that, since it was used in the US as a fruit, it counted as a fruit for the purposes of regulations and duties. A side effect was a reduction on imported rhubarb tariffs, as tariffs were higher for vegetables than fruits. The redder the stalk, the sweeter the taste. It was in the year 1771 when rhubarb was introduced to the East Coast and it was done by none other than Benjamin Franklin. It was the beginning of the 19th century when the pie with rhubarbs started gaining popularity in the country. In the same century, the pie traveled over to Europe where it was used in a variety of pies and pastries. Rhubarb pies are quite popular not just in the US, but also in Canada and UK. Rhubarbs are packed with nutrients like Vitamin C, Vitamin K, magnesium, calcium, antioxidants, and fiber. Strawberries are the only berry varieties to have seeds on the outside of the fruit. This is probably why they are not generally counted among the berry families by some. The rhubarb present in the pie also helps in reducing blood pressure, burning fat, and in also generating myelin for your brain. The rhubarbs are sweeter if the stalks are red, more the red, greater the sweetness. #NationalStrawberryRhubarbPieDay #StrawberryRhubarbPie #FoodSales #WeKnowFood #FoodConsultant #FoodDude #FoodService #Food #FoodServiceSolutions #FoodOfTheDay #NobertSales @NobertSales (at Germantown, Tennessee) https://www.instagram.com/p/CelpBplAe7v/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
