Some may feed and pet them, most will ignore them, a few may try to hurt them. Who is there to protect them? They are not safe on the street and don’t belong on the side of the road. Educated guesses estimate the number of stray dogs across #Greece to as high as 1 million. Stray dogs are caused by irresponsible dog owners who never face the consequences provided for in Greek law for pet abandonment. These souls are the ones who lose out. In the best case they will find food, but hardly protection from those who want to hurt them (four-legged or two-legged); certainly not from cars that may injure or kill them, and only the limited vet care that animal welfare organizations struggle so hard to offer. We can change all this!! We can act in ways that will stop this unpunished flow of abandonment. Remind your neighbors to microchip and register their dogs as the law requires. Encourage them to neuter their dogs, and not let their dogs roam the neighborhood. A growing community of increasingly responsible and law-abiding dog owners is the proven path to stop seeing abandoned dogs on the street. Don’t forget: 1. An abandoned dog is an innocent victim. 2. Behind each abandoned dog is an irresponsible and law-breaking dog owner. 3. Abandonment is animal abuse. 4.
