Wait, picking crushes isn't something we all do?

It’s a bit of a complicated question really!

So I’m alloromantic (not aromantic, I experience romantic attraction) but I’ll try my best to answer!

Now, if a crush on a person is genuine, it isn’t something you choose. Romantic attraction simply just happens, you can’t choose when or how or who you’re attracted to, it just like happens.

Picking crushes is a common experience of aromantic people (people who don’t experience romantic attraction/experience it very infrequently.) Because of society being the way it is, people are expected to experience romantic attraction.

That’s why aro people, who don’t experience romantic attraction, sometimes pick their crushes.

It isn’t an aromantic exclusive experience, though. Many gay guys and lesbians will “pick” crushes of the other binary gender, due to heteronormativity, and grow up thinking everyone picks their crushes.

Some mspec people, people who only experience romantic attraction later in life, also pick their crushes.

I’m bisexual and only started experiencing romantic attraction when I was a teenager. As a child I would always pick a random boy to have a crush on so my friends wouldn’t tease me, but later I had genuine crushes which I knew were genuine since I didn’t control them, nor could I choose them.

If you’re picking a crush it is not genuine--crushes aren’t something you can choose.
