On an airplane, every pound of weight counts. For his senior thesis project, mechanical engineering concentrator Dennis Zhang focused on the foam beams used in aircraft, applying a novel manufacturing technique in an effort to produce beams that are more weight-efficient. He was inspired by the structure of bones, which are naturally dense around the exterior and spongy in the middle. He applied the same mindset to foam beams, using a polyurethane foam that expands and solidifies into a rigid material, leading to a beam with an exterior density that is greater than its interior density. He studied how to effectively create a beam that balanced durability with lightweight structure, using a centrifuge to compress the cells inside the foam and increase density, before pre-curing the foam prior to molding to increase the exterior-to-interior density ratio. Zhang’s method was able to increase the strength over similar foam beams by 8.3 percent. “My goal was to develop a novel manufacturing method for creating structural foam beams that are more weight-efficient than traditionally-manufactured foam beams, with potential aerospace applications,” he said. “Since weight is so costly to airlines, the ability to create beams that are significantly lighter without compromising structural integrity could lead to large savings in both money and environmental impact. What could deep sea sponges teach us about building stronger structures? Grad student Matheus Fernandes is using math and computer science to unlock the sponges' secrets. The skeletons of glass sponges are composed of a square lattice-like structure—a grid formed by intersecting vertical and horizontal beams, each square reinforced by two diagonal bracings. This double diagonal construction creates a stabilization mechanism for the lattice structure. He created prototypes, computer simulations, and optimization algorithms to study how the sponge design compares to other similar architectural lattice structures. “I never expected I would be working with a deep sea sponge,” he said. “This research is full of unexpected results. We have found a solution inspired by a natural phenomenon to a problem we didn’t even know we had. Humans of SEAS⠀ "One of the really nice things about the undergraduate CS program at Harvard is that, even with honors, it’s only 12 credits, so there’s a lot of freedom to explore—especially psychology, which is my secondary field, as well as philosophy or history. Part of the exploration has been seeing a lot of ties between what I've learned in CS and what I'm learning in other classes. For instance, this past fall I took CS 136, which is Computational Economics. There’s a lot of game theory involved, and now I'm taking a government class on international political economy. This semester I am also doing an independent study with Professor Ashley Whillans, and one of her grad students, at the @harvardhbs on a project about creativity and resource scarcity. So, the question we’re asking is: if, and if so under what conditions, does resource scarcity affect the creativity of solutions? The topic of my independent study is actually applying that to the startup industry. I think there's a lot of street wisdom in that industry, about funding in particular and whether it's good to get a lot of funding and therefore get your name out there and attract talent, or not relying on a lot of funding because you want that feeling of scarcity, like having your back up against the wall, to force you to be creative. I think a lot of the discourse on the topic has largely been from the industry—the investors or founders—and I think it'll be really cool to take a look at this industry through the organizational behavior point of view and run some analytics on some pretty good models of startup success and quantify start up creativity as a function of how much funding they receive, which is a question I'm really interested in.” ⠀ — Janet Chen, A.B. Imagine a tool that draws on vast genomic datasets and allows biologists to see how interactions between DNA influence gene regulation, in the same way that a Google Map lets the user zoom in on a street address to see what’s nearby in the neighborhood. Scanning a map, rather than searching a dizzying genomic database, helps researchers identify and explore the interactions caused by folding DNA strands, said Fritz Lekschas, a computer science Ph.D. candidate at #HarvardSEAS who is developing such a tool in the lab of Hanspeter Pfister, An Wang Professor of Computer Science. The way a strand of DNA “folds,” bringing different sections into close proximity to one another, can cause interactions that may block certain genes, Lekschas explained. Using novel techniques, biologists are able to measure these interactions across the entire genome, but finding meaningful patterns among the billions of characters that make up the genome is no easy task.
